About the American Redbud, cercis canadensis

The American Redbud tree is an American classic! (It is also called Eastern Redbud, Judas Tree, and Flowering Judas.) Known for its showy reddish-purple blossoms, this flowering tree is one of the first plants to herald the arrival of spring. It is native to North America.

The spectacular display of dark pink color in April makes this a favorite ornamental tree! This small tree provides three seasons of visual interest, with lovely heart shaped leaves in the summer and dangling seed pods in the fall. The tree typically develops a vase shape, as the trunk will divide into multi trunks near the ground.

Use the American Redbud as a landscape focal point, or plant several in a row to create an unforgettable border. The flowers of the tree are edible!

Growing American Redbuds

These trees are versatile, growing in full sun or partial shade. They are heat tolerant. The American Redbud has a medium growth rate and will reach twenty to thirty feet in height at maturity. It typically has a lifespan around twenty years. See below for more characteristics and USDA zone compatibility.

Buy American Redbud trees to enjoy their stunning beauty in your lawn each spring.
