Dwarf Plum Trees

Dwarf Plum Trees Buyer's Guide

Dwarf plum trees are ideal for small-space fruit gardeners who want to experience the pleasure of harvesting home-grown plums. These plum trees, both European and Japanese, reach a modest 8- to 10-feet tall and wide at maturity and you should allow 8- to 10-feet of space between planting holes for multiple trees. Harvest, care, and maintenance can all be performed from the safety of the ground and, if you need to keep the tree at a more modest 5- to 6-foot size, it’s possible through routine pruning. Dwarf plum trees also make excellent options for growing in containers! Dwarf European plum trees yield about one-half to one bushel of full-sized oblong fruit that is enjoyed fresh, in jams and jellies, and dried as prunes. Dwarf Japanese plum trees bear about 3-4 bushels of full-sized round plums, great for fresh snacks and making colorful preserves. Don’t let limited space keep you from growing your own plums — just plant dwarf plum trees!
