Asparagus plants (Asparagus officinalis) are perennial vegetables that produce tasty, tender spears year after year. With proper care and maintenance, asparagus plants can produce in your garden for over 15 years! Asparagus varieties are available in two color options: traditional green asparagus, which is a more vigorous grower, and the burgundy-purple asparagus, which produces sweeter, more tender spears. Available as year-old, bare-root crowns, asparagus plants should be planted in nutrient-rich soil in the spring or fall. Once mature, you can start harvesting your first home-grown spears in just two growing seasons.
