Apple Trees

Growing your own apple tree can be easy, affordable and fun. We offer a huge selection to suit a wide range of climates, environments and spaces. This includes cold-hardy, easy-care, dessert and antique varieties, along with other exclusive apple trees you won’t find anywhere else. Each will produce bushels of healthy, flavorful apples that can be eaten fresh off the tree, stored for later, or used to make pies or ciders. You can’t beat the superior homegrown taste — or the savings — you’ll enjoy if you plant one of these trees instead of making countless trips to the grocery store.

Buyer's Guide

To ensure your growing success and satisfaction, there are a few things to consider when shopping for an apple tree.

Mature Tree Size

Make sure you pick the right size for your space. When our apple trees mature, they will be one of three sizes:

  • Dwarf apple trees mature to be about 8-10' tall and wide. Even though they are smaller, they produce an abundance of full-size fruit.
  • Semi-dwarf apple trees mature to be about 12-15' tall and wide. They offer maximum fruit yield per square foot.
  • Standard apple trees mature to be about 15-25' tall and 20' wide. They are perfect if you have a large space or want a multi-purpose shade tree.

Zone Compatibility

Your climate plays an important role in whether an apple tree will produce fruit or even survive. Before ordering a tree, make sure its recommended hardiness zone range includes your area. Most of our apple trees grow well in Zones 5-8, but we also have an impressive selection of cold-hardy varieties that can thrive in cooler northern climates (Zones 3-4) and some heat-tolerant varieties for growers who live in warmer areas in the south (Zones 9-10).

Proper Pollination

Pollination by a different variety is key to the success of most apple trees. Often, its absence is why trees produce poorly or don’t bear fruit. Some apple trees are self-pollinating, but we still recommend planting another variety in your yard for optimum fruit production. Be sure to check the description of the tree you’re interested in to see which pollinators our experts suggest. For example, we generally recommend planting the Golden Delicious variety within close proximity of any apple tree, because it is widely considered to be a universal pollinator for other varieties.
