Apple Trees

Growing your own apple tree can be easy, affordable and fun. We offer a huge selection to suit a wide range of climates, environments and spaces. This includes cold-hardy, easy-care, dessert and antique varieties, along with other exclusive apple trees you won’t find anywhere else. Each will produce bushels of healthy, flavorful apples that can be eaten fresh off the tree, stored for later, or used to make pies or ciders. You can’t beat the superior homegrown taste — or the savings — you’ll enjoy if you plant one of these trees instead of making countless trips to the grocery store.

Buyer's Guide

To ensure your growing success and satisfaction, there are a few things to consider when you buy an apple tree.

Mature Tree Size

Make sure you pick the right size tree for your available space. When our apple trees mature, they will be one of four sizes:

  • Columnar apple trees mature to be about 8-10' tall, but only 18-24" wide. This makes them perfect for growing in containers on balconies and patios.
  • Dwarf apple trees mature to be about 8-10' tall and wide. Even though they are smaller, they produce an abundance of full-size fruit.
  • Semi-dwarf apple trees mature to be about 12-15' tall and wide. They offer maximum fruit yield per sq ft.
  • Standard apple trees mature to be about 15-25' tall and 20' wide. They are perfect if you have a large space or want a multi-purpose shade tree.

Starkspur® Apple Trees

Maximize your fruit production by choosing a spur-type apple tree. These trees have up to twice as many fruiting spurs as other trees, which means more apples per tree.

Zone Compatibility

Your climate plays an important role in whether an apple tree will be successful. Make sure the hardiness zone range of the tree you choose includes your area.

Proper Pollination

Pollination by a different apple variety is key to the success of most apple trees. Often, its absence is why trees produce poorly or don’t bear fruit. Be sure to check the description of your tree to see which pollinators our experts suggest.

We do grow some self-pollinating apple trees, but we still recommend planting a second apple variety in your yard for optimum fruit production.

As a note, we generally recommend planting a Golden Delicious apple tree within close proximity of any apple tree, because it is widely considered to be a universal pollinator for other varieties.

Shipping Information

Our apple trees will be shipped to you as bare-root trees (without soil) to ensure good contact with your garden soil. These young trees arrive in a dormant (resting) state and will spring to life soon after planting. They are about 3-4' tall with 3/8" or larger trunk diameter when shipped.

Upgrade Option

If you would like a head start on growing an apple tree, upgrade to one of our top-grade, robust Stark Supreme Trees®, which are hand picked by our team of experts. They are about 4-5' tall with 5/8" or larger trunk diameter when shipped.
