Pear Trees

Plant a pear tree in your yard, and enjoy having your own convenient resource for nutritious, flavorful snacks that are more affordable than those you’ll find at the grocery store. We offer an impressive selection of pear trees, falling into two categories. European pears — what most people think of as “classic” or “traditional” pears — are uniquely shaped fruits that taste best when harvested and allowed to ripen for a few days at room temperature. Asian pears are unique, Eastern-indigenous fruits that feature the juicy white flesh of a classic pear, but with the round shape and crisp, firm texture of an apple; this kind of pear is delicious right off the tree. Either variety produces fruit that is delicious when eaten as a snack, canned or spiced, or making desserts, salads, pear butters and more.

Buyer's Guide

If you’re new to growing your own, a pear tree is a great start. When asked what fruit tree a first-time grower should choose, our experts always recommend the Starking® Hardy Giant™ Asian Pear Tree because of its low-maintenance nature. In fact, three of our pear trees are listed as “Stark Picks” because of their simple upkeep and ease of growing. If you’re considering planting a pear tree in your backyard, there are a few things to consider to ensure growing success and satisfaction.

Mature Tree Size

Make sure you pick the right size for your space. When our pear trees mature, they will be one of three sizes:

  • Dwarf pear trees mature to be about 8-10' tall and 6-7' wide. Even though they are smaller, they produce an abundance of full-size fruit.
  • Semi-dwarf pear trees mature to be about 12-15' tall and wide. They offer maximum fruit yield per square foot.
  • Standard pear trees mature to be about 18-20' tall and 12-13' wide. They are perfect if you have a large space or want a multi-purpose shade tree.

Zone Compatibility

Your climate plays an important role in whether a pear tree will produce fruit or even survive. Before ordering a tree, make sure its recommended hardiness zone range includes your area.

Proper Pollination

Pollination by a different variety is key to the success of most pear trees. Often, its absence is why trees produce poorly or don’t bear fruit. Some pear trees are self-pollinating, but we still recommend planting another variety in your yard for optimum fruit production. Be sure to check the description of the tree you’re interested in to see which pollinators our experts recommend.

Shipping Information

Most of our pear trees will be shipped to you bare-root (without soil) to ensure good contact with your garden soil. These young trees arrive in a dormant (resting) state and will spring to life soon after planting. They are about 3-4' tall with 3/8" or larger trunk diameter when shipped to you. If you would like a head start on growing a pear tree, upgrade to one of our top-grade, robust Stark Supreme Trees®, which are handpicked by our team of experts. They are about 4-5' tall with 5/8" or larger trunk diameter when shipped to you.
