Fig Trees Buyer's Guide

In ancient times, Greeks and Romans cultivated fig trees for their ornamental and edible qualities. Growing your own is a great way to bring beauty to your landscape and unique, tasty treats to your table. Plus, a fig tree can grow well in a container, so it makes a perfect choice for those with limited growing space. Regardless of how or where you grow them, these trees are typically heat-tolerant, drought-tolerant, hardy and low-maintenance, so you won’t have to worry about constant pruning, fertilizing or watering. As they grow and begin to produce, you will see young, green fruit that ripens over time into a brown/purple color. You’ll know it’s ready to pick when it begins to droop. These figs taste great fresh off the tree or dried and eaten later as a snack.

To ensure your growing success and satisfaction, there are a few things to consider when you buy a fig tree.

Zone Compatibility

Before ordering any tree, make sure its recommended hardiness zone range includes your area. Your climate plays an important role in whether a tree will produce figs or even survive. Fig trees are heat-tolerant and typically grow well in warmer climates, Zones 5-10. If you are in a colder zone, consider growing a fig tree in a container so that you can bring the tree indoors for protection during cold weather.

Mature Tree Size

Make sure you pick the right size tree for your space. When our fig trees mature, they can be up to 30-35’ tall and wide, but are available smaller depending on the variety you choose. Any fig tree can be kept smaller by growing it in a container.
