Southern Highbush Blueberry
Southern Highbush Blueberry Buyer's Guide
By growing southern highbush blueberry plants, you can enjoy some of the nation’s most commercially popular blueberries fresh from your own backyard. These plants are heat-tolerant, which means they excel in climates with higher average temperatures. Southern highbush varieties thrive in soils with a low pH level, and tend to be more drought-tolerant than their northern highbush counterparts. They ripen a bit earlier in the year (usually in June), when they produce impressive harvests of healthy, delicious blueberries. Plus, these plants are self-pollinating — perfect for small gardens or growing spaces — but will usually yield larger crops if planted near another blueberry variety. These plants may require mulch in winter for protection.
