Pear Trees

Plant a pear tree in your yard, and delight in having your own convenient resource for nutritious, flavorful snacks that are more affordable than those you’ll find at the grocery store. If you’re new to growing your own, a pear tree is a great start. The pear trees we offer fall into two categories: European pear trees produce fruit that is smooth and firm, sweet, juicy with the traditional pear-shape or “pyriform”. These pear trees are native to the more mild regions of Europe, like France, where many cultivated pear varieties are bred. Asian pear trees produce unique, Eastern-indigenous fruits that feature the juicy white flesh of a classic pear, but with the round shape and crisp, firm texture of an apple. Both types of pear tree feature delicate blossoms in the spring and vibrant foliage in the fall, adding seasonal beauty to your landscape.

Buyer's Guide

To ensure your growing success and satisfaction, there are a few things to consider when you buy a pear tree.

Sub-categories

We grow two types of pear trees:

Mature Tree Size

Make sure you pick the right size tree for your available space. When our pear trees mature, they will be one of three sizes:

  • Dwarf pear trees mature to be about 8-10' tall and 6-7' wide. Even though they are smaller, they produce an abundance of full-size fruit.
  • Semi-dwarf pear trees mature to be about 12-15' tall and wide. They offer maximum fruit yield per square foot.
  • Standard pear trees mature to be about 18-20' tall and 12-13' wide. They are perfect if you want a multi-purpose shade tree.

Zone Compatibility

Your climate plays an important role in whether a pear tree will produce fruit or even survive. Before ordering a tree, make sure its recommended hardiness zone range includes your area.

Proper Pollination

Pollination by a different pear variety is key to the success of most pear trees. Often, its absence is why trees produce poorly or don’t bear fruit. Be sure to check the description of your tree to see which pollinators our experts recommend.

We do grow some self-pollinating pear trees, but we still recommend planting another pear variety in your yard for optimum fruit production.

Shipping Information

Most of our pear trees will be shipped to you as bare-root trees (without soil) to ensure good contact with your soil. These young trees arrive in a dormant (resting) state and will spring to life soon after planting. They are about 3-4' tall with 3/8" or larger trunk diameter when shipped.

Upgrade Option

If you would like a head start on growing a pear tree, upgrade to one of our top-grade, robust Stark Supreme Trees®, which are hand-picked by our team of experts. They are about 4-5' tall with 5/8" or larger trunk diameter when shipped to you.

We have some big news...We're joining with Stark Bro's!

Dear Friends,

I'm very excited to announce that after 75 years, Miller Nurseries will now become part of Stark Bro's, a highly respected nursery company that's been "growing" their famous legacy since 1816.

Who is Stark Bro's?

For nearly 200 years, Stark Bro's has been producing high-quality fruit trees, berries and garden plants for gardeners like you. With their great nursery stock and expert advice, they've been helping generations of families reap not only the rewards of growing their own fruits and nuts, but to enjoy huge savings in the process. Stark Bro's has a long-standing reputation for quality, honesty and really taking care of their customers.

When my brother David passed away suddenly last spring, I knew it was time to retire. One of the first things I did was to call Cameron Brown, the president of Stark Bro's. He is a long-time friend and a very trustworthy fellow, and treats his customers like gold. I knew he would take care of you in exactly the same way. David would have liked this arrangement, and I take comfort in that.

What's going to happen to Miller Nurseries and my customer account?

It's only going to get better as part of the Stark Bro's family. You'll now be able to come here to StarkBros.com and sign in with your existing username and password, and purchase products just like you did on the Miller Nurseries website... only the selection will be much larger! You'll still be able to buy Miller's familiar "Canandaigua Quality" hardy plants as well as the enormous assortment of trees and plants Stark Bro's offers.

We want to take this opportunity to acknowledge our family, our wonderful employees, and especially you - our loyal customers - for your support and patronage over these last 75 years. Thank you for being such an important part of our heritage.

Warm regards,
John Miller, CEO
Miller Nurseries
