Questions & Answers
Not sure on a bucket of water, but I have put 6 cuttings in an aquaponics bed and they are taking off.
If you clean the skirt and step off, wash them, dry them, they can be frozen for use anytime. I keep about 8 gallons of gooseberries in the freezer until ready to use. They stay indefinitely, or as long as the next season approaches.
These are delicious and productive gooseberries. But they are a bit tart for fresh eating; I use them for jam, which is superb. If you wait until they are fully red, a fair number will fall of f the plants. If heated with a bit of confectioners sugar, and used after chilling as a sauce for ice cream or other desserts, they are also excellent.
Hi Dianne - Based on the reviews, they are all equally recommended. The Invicta gooseberry is probably the most disease resistant of the ones we have at this time.
A unique tart and sweet combination. Tart skin covers the sweet flesh
I wear a long sleeve shirt when picking. Work your arm carefully to the center and come back to pick the berries. The thorns point outward so once you have carefully got your arm in the center, bring your hand/arm back out and the thorns are less likely to prick your skin. The long sleeves (heavy shirt) prevent most of the pricking. The first year and before I learned how to pick the berries, my arms were scratched throughout. When you pick, the berries usually hang on the down side so you can blindly feel the berries as you pick them. The reward is well worth the effort.
Ribes Uva Crispa of subgenus/subgroup Grossularia. Common European gooseberry probably introduced from Asia!
