Superb for pies or juice. The fruit from this variety is like Montmorency, but larger and firmer. It ripens over an extended period of time, so you can stretch out your enjoyment of fresh cherries with bright red juice. Originates from Újfehértói, Hungary, introduced to the U.S. circa 1998. Ripens in late June. Self-pollinating, but bears larger crops when pollinated with another pie cherry tree.

What would be the best pollinator cherry tree with the balaton?
Joan D on Mar 24, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Balaton is self-pollinating, but another sour cherry variety like North Star or Montmorency would cross-pollinate it for bigger cherry crops.

great sour cherry
Very good cherry for pies. Sweeter and larger than North Star or Montmorency. You can eat them fresh, but they should still be considered a tart cherry. Perfect for pies with a lovely dark, red color.

The Balaton makes a very good pie. While not as sweet as a Bing, we still snack on them fresh.

Balaton Pie Cherry
This tree was slow to take off but is now strong and beautiful. Has many flowers and is doing much better than trees bought at Home Depot the same time we planted this one.

Great carefree tree!
I planted a Balaton cherry a few years ago and was so happy with it that I ordered another. They start to produce early, are okay with our erratic spring weather in the Rockies and are rarely bothered by pests. The fruit makes delicious pies and jam.

Balaton pie cherry
Our supreme dwarf cherry is in its second spring and doing fantastic. It had heavy flowers this spring so I believe we will be getting cherries this summer! Yah! Couldn't be more happy with all the trees I've gotten from stark brothers!

This is a hearty tree!
I planted this tree one year ago. The crazy thing has at least 20-30 cherries on it. It seems like a pretty tough tree. A great purchase!

Winter killed
I was looking forward to this cherry tree and hoping it would bear fruit this year. This is the only tree that didn't make it through the winter. I would not recommend the Balaton cherry tree. I ordered the Select, more expensive, but the tree that I received was very crooked. To me it was a huge waste of money. I have time and money invested in the tree and received nothing for it.

Cherry Tree Order
The three cherry trees In my order--a Balaton, North Star, and Montmorency--arrived in excellent condition and look to be very healthy, sturdy stock with a good root base. Unlike many such companies, Stark always seems to do a good job with their shipping: carefully packaged and prompt in mailing.
