About the Garden Delicious Genetic Dwarf Apple Tree

An easy-to-maintain dwarf apple tree for any growing space!

The Garden Delicious is a genetic dwarf apple tree that only reaches about 8-10 ft. in height. Developed by Floyd Zaiger, the Garden Delicious Genetic Dwarf apple tree can be planted in the ground or in a container. It’s the perfect size for a patio apple tree!

Lovely blooms make their appearance in April, followed by full-sized apples that ripen in September. Garden Delicious produces sweet, yellow-green apples that have a slight red blush. These apples store well and are wonderful for cooking, preserving, and baking.

How to Grow Garden Delicious Apples

The Garden Delicious is a very productive tree for its size and it starts producing at an early age. This apple tree performs well in hot climates and is also cold hardy. Plant in full sun with well-draining soil. The Garden Delicious is known to have resistance to apple scab.

For best results and for a larger crop, plant with a pollinator nearby. With a little maintenance, you’ll have homegrown apples to harvest from your own backyard!

Why did you choose this?

Because of my age, a dwarf tree will work better for me when harvesting.

Wanted dwarf fruit tree for small yard.

To pollinate my honey crisp

Small area to plant. On sale.

When do I plant?

We appreciate you reaching out to us. Because weather and soil conditions vary so much from year to year and even within your zone, it's best to think of your planting time as a range of favorable conditions instead of an exact time.

You can plant new plants and trees:
1) when the ground is not frozen.
2) when daytime temperatures are above freezing (32ºF) and below 90ºF.
3) when extreme weather (blizzard, hail, torrential rain, etc.) is not in the forecast. Be sure to keep plants watered if you're transplanting in warm and/or dry weather.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!

This says it gets 8-10 feet wide but I want to grow it in a container. Will the container mean that it doesn’t get as wide?

This is correct.
If you must have them in containers, try to get the biggest ones you can.
My trees are all in very large grow bags for the time being (due to our heavy, compacted clay soil that requires a machine to dig up). The bags are both very deep and wide to allow the roots as much room as possible.

What kind of disease resistance does this variety have?

This variety is only know to be resistant to apple scab.

What rootstock is this tree on?

We appreciate you reaching out to us. We use several different rootstocks, depending upon the desired result and what is available. For that reason, we're unable to guarantee a specific rootstock.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!

The description says this tree can be planted in a container. I am in Maine , zone 5. How would I protect the tree in winter?

Trees planted in containers need to moved indoors to an unheated garage or basment so the roots do not freeze but so the tree still experiences its chilling hours required.

If this on it's own root, or grafted to a rootstock?

This is a grafted tree.

Can i put a Starkspur® Arkansas Black Apple Tree and a Garden delicious dwarf apple together for pollination?

That is correct as golden delish acts as a common pollinator for most apple trees.

I purchased the tree a few months ago. It comes in bare root, a stick with roots. I planted in a 15 gallon fabric container. It is sprouting leaves and appreares to be doing well.

Failure To Thrive Garden Delicious
Unfortunately this bare root apple tree has not produced a single bud or leaf since we received it. We planted it on 17 April and it has been a bare twig sticking up from the ground ever since. Don't know what we did wrong, but very disappointed!
