Description

The Tuliptree is one of the largest native trees in North America. This magnificent, aristocratic tree, can grow to 90 feet. It is a member of the magnolia family and has distinct tulip-shaped flowers. The showy, goblet-shaped, orange-yellow-green flowers appear in late spring. This beautiful native tree has lasting, lightly scented blooms that give way to stunning fall foliage. Leaves of this Tulip Tree turn golden-yellow giving it interest throughout the seasons.

Tuliptrees are best as a single specimen in a large setting or grouped in groves. They are hardy and will grow in most conditions. It is recommended as a shade tree. The tree’s tall and rapid growth is a function of its shade intolerance. Grown in the full sun, the species tends to grow shorter, slower, and rounder, making it adaptable to landscape planting.

In addition to the beauty of this fast-growing tree, the soft white woods are often used for woodworking – especially for cabinetwork. The wood is often marketed as “Yellow-Poplar or “American tulipwood”.

This tree is also often referred to as American Tulip Tree, Tulip Poplar, or simply as Tulip Tree.

My trees arrived in beautiful shape! I planted them in cardboard tree planters and have been following the instructions to leave them out during the day and bring them in at night. They are budding and I have growth almost immediately. I can't wait to watch them grow. i will post again next year.

Tulip Tree in Zone 7B (Central Alabama)
It arrived as a tall very thin bare-root stick with no branching or leaves - but with a nice, closed bud at the very top. I added a Bamboo stake for support to it, I had saved from an earlier Stark order. That bud has already begun to open into a flower just a few days after arrival!

So far, all I have done was to put it in a a three-gallon pot of potting soil with a very small amount of fertilizer the day it came - along with adding the supporting stake. Spring rains are all the water it has had or needed in the few days I've had it. After it has time to develop some good root growth in a protected area, I'll plant it in my yard with some fencing around it to keep the deer away from it.

I do have one regret - that the Sweet Bay Magnolia I ordered with this tulip tree was cancelled by Stark. But I ordered and quickly received a nice very well-developed 5-foot Sweet Bay full of leaves in a 3-gallon pot from Fast Growing Trees - at roughly three times the Stark price.

A bit disappointing....
Last year the dry root tulip tree that I ordered, never came to life. I planted it in a large pot immediately, and by July, it was still dead....not a leaf. I couldn't get a replacement, as they were sold out. This year, it came in March, and I planted it in a large pot immediately. It took a very long time for the tree to sprout any leaves...from March until the end of June. It barely has leaves now, and if it doesn't improve and grow over the next few months, I'm not sure I will be able to plant it in the place I want it this fall.

This is the second tulip tree i have ordered, and the second tree that has died on me.
I'm sure it's something i am doing wrong since i have 10 other types of trees i have ordered from Stark Brothers with no problems.... so far.

Disappointed
After planting our tulip tree in May 2023 (central Iowa) , it has produced very few leaves measuring about 1 cm in size. I am not sure how this tree will survive to produce food on limited leaf surface. At this point I am disappointed in our purchase. Mona Satre
