Harkens back to memories of my childhood when almost every yard in the Gulf south had its own mimosa tree, before the blight destroyed them all. I recently saw a mature mimosa in central Texas and realized they had made a comeback. Had to get some for myself.

How fast do mimosas grow?
pmedley33 p on Feb 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Mine grew almost 12 feet in one season!
I love mimosa trees, but have a small yard, can I prune it to keep it the size I need?
Carrie R on Jun 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, they can be pruned. After the pruning they will become fuller.
Do deer bother the tree when it is full grown or just during the sapling stage?
Susan on Apr 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: In the seven months I have had my Mimosa, I have only had the deer munch on it once, and that was a tender little branch. I have a fishing net staked about three feet around it to keep the deer at bay until it gets more size on it, but other than that, I really don't see a problem - but boy they sure do like my little apple tree, I have " IT " staked too - COMPLETELY!!! all is well!!! I really don't mind deer munching on the Mimosa but not now since it is still just a toddler - once it gets more size on it and can handle a bite here or there it'll be different.. if they want to nibble it'll be better then..
My mimosa is probably 7 years old but has never bloomed. Are their reasons for this?
KAREN G on Sep 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: We recommend you do a soil test, as it sounds like the tree is not getting enough phosphorus. Presuming it's getting enough sun and is not in full shade, if the soil is clay or wet, that will hamper the tree's root development, which is directly connected to its ability to bloom.
Do you have multiple trunk mimosa tree?
Brian V on Feb 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This variety naturally forms multiple trunks.
I planted my tree last year and seems to be doing well although I still have it staked to keep it steady until it's bigger. My concern is I have noticed branches yellowing and then dying and falling off. There are still healthy branches but it seems more are starting to die. What can I do?
Brigitte T on Jul 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The simple thing would be to keep the dead limbs pruned off so that the remaining healthy limbs can thrive. Additionally, I would suggest getting some good pictures of the issue (before pruning) and reaching out locally for expert help where you're located. There is an issue called "mimosa wilt" that isn't a problem everywhere, but it could be something that is affecting mimosa trees in your area.
How long is their lifespan ?
Sharon L on Oct 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Mimosa trees can live from 30-45 years, depending upon the soil, climate and available nutrients, sunlight and rainfall.
Is this a good indoor tree?
Derek R on Jan 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No. It needs lots of sun and more than an 8' ceiling. It's a beautiful tree and it can get fairly large outside (not huge), but too big for a house unless you are a talented bonsai horticulturist. Mine in Tx did not survive our clay soil. We had one in So Cal and it did very well, and one in central CA that was quite large for a mimosa. I'd love to have another one.
My Mimosa grew just a feet, or so, in more than a year and a half. What should I do?
Sidney on Mar 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It's ok - just allow more time and sunshine; but don't water it too often !
Does this mimosa tree spread/produce more trees?
T K on Feb 6, 2019
BEST ANSWER: It will when older. But you can control the sprouts. We planted the two we purchased about 1 1/2 years ago and have not had problems with sprouts yet.
Is the Mimosa tree evergreen in Zone 5 (Northern Indiana)?
Sheila B on May 12, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No it is not.
When and for how long is the bloom time?
Alex W on Jan 10, 2019
BEST ANSWER: That will depend upon your growing zone (the further south, the earlier it blooms) and how warm the weather is during the bloom period (warmer weather = a shorter bloom time). On average, this gorgeous tree blooms all summer long.
Is this variety susceptible to weak branches and breakage like other mimosa varieties?
Alex W on Jan 4, 2019
BEST ANSWER: This cultivar is hardier than the species mimosa, and is far less prone to limb breakage during storms/high winds.
How long before it reaches mature height?
Kat G on Nov 19, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Gaining up to three feet of growth annually, mimosa trees are incredibly fast growing. A good estimate is about 5-7 years.

Do the leaves close when u touch it?
Monteen P on Aug 22, 2020
BEST ANSWER: When touched, this sensitive leaf reacts to stimulus as there is a higher pressure at that point and the water in the vacuoles of the cells of the leaf lose water to the adjacent cell. All the water escapes the leaf (via the pulvinus) which then becomes flaccid. This causes the leaves to close
when is the best time to plant a mimosa tree?
Donna S on Aug 18, 2020
BEST ANSWER: We appreciate you reaching out to us. Because weather and soil conditions vary so much from year to year and even within your zone, it's best to think of your planting time as a range of favorable conditions instead of an exact time.

You can plant new plants and trees:
1) when the ground is not frozen.
2) when daytime temperatures are above freezing (32??F) and below 90??F.
3) when extreme weather (blizzard, hail, torrential rain, etc.) is not in the forecast. Be sure to keep plants watered if you're transplanting in warm and/or dry weather.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!
Are the seeds pods and seeds toxic?
LunaRose S on Apr 19, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes but I'm not sure if they are toxic both trees are not by my dog. Last year I got the pretty fuzzy flower so I ordered a second one. Good luck

Didn't make it through the winter
Our mimosa arrived carefully packaged and in good shape. It took fairly quickly and grew through the summer. However, it did not last through the winter. We are in zone 6, but I think a combination of less than ideal soil and an exposed, windy location made it too hard for the tree to survive.

Amazing! Transplanted this tree from the old house to the new one. It had been in the ground about a year. On a rainy day, took the risk of transplanting and now it's budding! Great tree.

Healthy tree On time
Received this Mimosa a year ago. Planted it last spring. I live in Western PA, so the growing conditions aren't ideal, but sure enough this year the tree had buds and leaves on it. The quality of the tree upon arrival was great. It also came on schedule. Thanks and I'll be ordering again I'm sure.

When it came it was just a stick was not to sure about that. Then it started budding and it is growing nicely. A dog chewed the top off and didn't know if it would make it but it is coming along very well.

Great little survivor
I got the mimosa sapling two years ago, very late in the season, and planted it right away. It leafed out beautifully, and then the dreadful neighborhood deer came and ate it to ribbons. There was nothing but the skinny trunk left. Wanting to give it another chance, I fenced the trunk and hoped it might recover. Last spring it came back - not as beautiful or luxuriantly as before, just a small growth, but it keeps growing and I hope one day will spread and flower, with adequate protection. Very pleased to have this determined little tree.

This tree came very well packaged and I planted it as soon as I got it! I love Mimosa's. My other one died of the 'Wilt' and I am still in mourning over it, These are truly lovely trees. The Hummingbirds loved the flowers - they would come three or four at a time to drink from the flowers and the birds loved it, the little squirrels used to sit in it and eat their food and I could see it from the living-room where my chair is. But now I have a new one, and it is growing and seems happy where it is. I have it mulched and our Spring here in Virginia so far has been fairly wet, so its getting enough water and now that it is mid-May it is out in full foliage. I can't wait until it gets a little more growth on it. I think one of things about plants is the watching them grow and mature and to show you their happiness with their beauty and growth. This one is placed where I can watch this one grow too, and the birds are already visiting it to sit upon its branches. I was surprised at how fast it grew in one season - as it grew at least three feet its first year in the ground. These trees are a little temperamental but the wait is worth it and its shade will cover my deck and provide shade from the early morning sun coming in my glass sliding doors.. Love it.. highly recommend the Mimosa, just read up on it and make sure you understand it thoroughly BEFORE you plant it.. They are worth the care. Thank you Stark, you have done it again.. Love my little tree!! Be prepared to smile :o).
