Why did you choose this?

I hope the deer are afraid of stepping on it

to help this tree survive

workds as designed

I want to try these, I hope it will stop Bermuda grass from growing around the tree trunks. I won’t have to weed-eat and cause potential damage to the soft tree trunk bark.

Several times here, the Dewitt mat is described as 2” deep. Is that 2” THICK from the horizontal surface on the ground to the horizontal surface facing the sky?

No, it is no thicker than cheap tarp material. That is probably describing the hole in the center for the sapling. Save some cash, buy a tarp, and cut it up.

Can this be safely cut smaller?

I would avoid that if possible as it will probably fray a good amount after cutting. If possible just fold and put a layer of wood chips on top. If you have to cut then melt the edge to help prevent fraying.

Does it take the place of mulch for warmth in the cold?

No, This is mainly to help control weeds from being around the trunk. I would put this down and then mulch over it.

would the grass under the tree die?

I would remove the bulk of any green materials, weeds or grass, as close to the soil as possible before placing the mat. As the weeds and grass die off and begin to decay, it can create excessive heat and nitrogen which could then damage the roots of a young tree. Especially in summer.

What are these mats made of? Is it something that will rot and fall apart. Plastic, tarp fiber etc? Do you have to replace them every so often?

This is made of a polypropylene woven ground cover material. They are pretty durable and shouldn't need to be replaced often.

Do you removed them for winter (zone 6) or just leave them?

I’ve left mine in place under mulch for 3 years now. The only damage is from my weedeater. These things hold up. West Virginia zone 6a

Can you use under fruit trees? Also If so what type of mulch would be best to put on top of the mat, I’ve always read to just have bare dirt under fruit trees?

Yes you can. I have them around my apple trees, peach trees, and my blueberry bushes. I just put brown mulch around the trees and over the mats. I have not noticed any issues with the trees, and it has helped with weed eating around the trees. I don't have to worry about hitting the trunk with a string trimmer now, or with spraying grass killer around the tree, possibly causing damage.

Can you mulch on top of theses without hurting the tree?

Yes. Make sure you don't pile the mulch onto the trunk, keep a space between trunk and mulch so the tree won't develop diseases. Speaking of which, I see your tree's trunk is wrapped for protection. Be aware that I used wraps on my peach trees and they developed canker. Also gave a spot for borers to hide while they ate into the wood, had to destroy trees. Hope you have great success with yours.

Does the tree circle interfere with watering?

I ordered a couple of sets last summer. I really like them. When I water I usually slow drip from the hose, which I tuck under near the base. I also use a sprinkler when watering the lawn. The water seems to be able to penetrate just fine. No pooling. I also like the size of the circle.

Would this guard slow down raccoons? They tasted and tossed all my unripe peaches last year!

Not raccoons. It's a plastic mesh. It is best used around tree, and under mulch to help with weeds and water

A bit of mulch on the ring keeps it tidy and in place. Hand pull any weeds that grow up next to trunk.

Great protectors. Allows water through but keeps weeds (and weed whackers) away from plants & trees. They remain in place once secured regardless of season or weather.

Handy weed barrier
I've used weed barriers for years, so obviously I like them. These are nice because the edges are sewn (not seamstress quality, but adequate). I bought them for several trees and fruit bushes (blueberries, honey berries, Kiwi). Work well.

Great produce. Made it easy to keep the weeds back. Water does not absorb quickly but does eventually pass through it. Great with a nice layer of mulch over it.

So glad I tried them!
Bought one package and was one short of how many trees we had to plant. The ones with this circle are almost weed-free except what is growing on top of the mulch and the other with only mulch is an absolute mess of weeds and not growing nearly as well. These are absolutely worth it and I wish I had used on the half dozen other trees planted previously that all struggled to get started as I think they would have done so much better with these.
