Organic Garlic & Shallots

Our garlic and shallots are all certified USDA Organic, meaning the sets were grown in soil that has not been exposed to chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides for at least three years. The USDA’s annual re-certification means they will always be truly certified organic.

Garlic is a bulbous herb in the Allium genus (“allium” translates to “garlic” in Greek), which makes it a close cousin of shallots. Both are staples in kitchens around the globe. Shallots have become something of an expensive delicacy; garlic isn’t as pricey, but either way, you’ll save plenty by planting these two easy-to-grow flowering bulbs in your kitchen garden. Planting these two (but not near strawberries, please) is a simple, inexpensive way to keep mice and rabbits out of your garden, as they detest the smell. Even deer will think twice.

Use garlic in any and all savory dishes, and consider shallots when you’d like a milder, sweeter flavor that is more like an onion. Garlic and shallots mature in about 90-150 days, depending upon the variety. Each mature garlic head yields approximately a dozen or more cloves, and each mature shallot head will give you three or four very large cloves. Both garlic and shallots are available as half-pound packages of sets, which will give you more than two pounds of mature cloves from each package. Grow your own, and take your cooking to the next level!
