Superb for pies or juice. The fruit from this variety is like Montmorency, but larger and firmer. It ripens over an extended period of time, so you can stretch out your enjoyment of fresh cherries with bright red juice. Originates from Újfehértói, Hungary, introduced to the U.S. circa 1998. Ripens in late June. Self-pollinating, but bears larger crops when pollinated with another pie cherry tree.

Size & Spacing

Mature Size

When your tree matures, it will be approximately 12 - 15' tall x 12 - 15' wide.

Recommended Spacing

We recommend spacing these trees 12 - 15' apart to ensure room for growth.

Pollination

This variety is self pollinating.

In many cases, you may still want to plant pollinating partners to increase the size of your crops, but with self-pollinating varieties doing so is optional. You'll get fruit with only one plant!

What would be the best pollinator cherry tree with the balaton?
Joan D on Mar 24, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Balaton is self-pollinating, but another sour cherry variety like North Star or Montmorency would cross-pollinate it for bigger cherry crops.
is the Balaton Pie Cherry tree salt tolerant?
Debbie on Mar 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have not seen anything addressing the salt tolerance of this variety, so I would suggest playing it safe and avoid growing in soil with a high salt content. If you can't avoid the salt content of your soil, then you can grow this cherry tree in a container instead.
Hi, I am looking for a tart cherry tree. Is the above tree bears tart cherries?
Nina G on May 10, 2020

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!
Could you pollinate Ballaton with a sweet cherry such as emperors sweet Francis?
Miriam R on May 2, 2020
BEST ANSWER: We appreciate you reaching out to us. The Balaton pie cherry is self pollinating and does not require another variety to bear fruit. Unfortunately this could not be used with a sweet cherry though as a sweet pollinates a sweet and a tart cherry will only pollinate another tart cherry.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!
how long does it take to produce fruit?
recie on Apr 30, 2020
BEST ANSWER: We appreciate you reaching out to us. You can find the years-to-bear information in the Characteristics section, near the top of the page, underneath the description. This tree takes 4-6 years to bear.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!
My newly planted montmorency cherry is starting to send out growth below the graft union. Should I remove and spray with pruning seal? Or, what should I do?
James C on Apr 28, 2020
BEST ANSWER: We appreciate you reaching out to us. Every part of the tree below the graft union comes from the rootstock tree; the trunk, branches and fruit emerge from the scion cultivar. When root suckers appear beneath the graft union, the growth comes from the rootstock tree, not the cultivar. Those need to be removed as soon as you are able.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!
Will the Balaton Pie cherry tree grow in Abilene tx? Your website says we are zone 8A and tree will be ok. Our local nursery says cherry trees dont do well here. We would love to have a pie cherry tree and hope it would do well.
sue k on Jan 30, 2020
BEST ANSWER: We appreciate you reaching out to us. Most cherry varieties have a chilling requirement of 800 or more hours, meaning that in order to break dormancy, blossom, and set fruit, the winter season needs to have at least 800 hours where the temperature is below 45 ??F. Your local nursery might be right, especially if you're location does not get a lot of chill hours.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!
I have a three year old Balaton, and recently placed an order for two more. I started with two Balaton's three years ago, but lost one last summer. My question is regarding pruning. Do I prune with the Open Center method, or prune with the Main Leader method? Thank you.
RascalCate on Jan 23, 2020
BEST ANSWER: We appreciate you reaching out to us. Pie/Sour/Tart cherry trees can be pruned to a modified central leader or more of an ???Open Center??? or ???Vase-Shaped??? structure. This structure keeps the canopy open to light and air circulation, which helps protect fruit and sustain quality.

BEST ANSWER: A dwarf tree will be 8-10' tall; a semi-dwarf 12-15' tall.
How many chill hours required for Balaton Cherry?
Terry K on Jun 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Unfortunately, this information is not available. I contacted Prof. Lezzoni at MSU who has done the most research with this variety, and even she could not provide an answer. Balaton can be grown as far south as Zone 8, so clearly the chill hours are going to be fewer than many other cherries.
Is there any disease resistance in Balaton?
ann m on Feb 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Balaton?? shows some resistance to fungal diseases, but sometimes extreme heat and/or humidity can still cause a problem. It's best to maintain a spray program, which you can do with natural products. Here's a very good article about that: //www.starkbros.com/growing-guide/article/fruit-tree-care-spray-weed-control

great sour cherry
Very good cherry for pies. Sweeter and larger than North Star or Montmorency. You can eat them fresh, but they should still be considered a tart cherry. Perfect for pies with a lovely dark, red color.

Great carefree tree!
I planted a Balaton cherry a few years ago and was so happy with it that I ordered another. They start to produce early, are okay with our erratic spring weather in the Rockies and are rarely bothered by pests. The fruit makes delicious pies and jam.

Cherry Trees, no munching.
Both trees purchased this year are growing madly. What made a huge difference between this year's trees and last year's is that I built wire cages to keep the deer away from the young trees. Without the munching, the new trees are thriving. Will need to enlarge the cages until the trees get tall enough to not need them... hoping the eventual cherries will be worth the effort, since there seems to be no other choice to get sour cherries these days.
