Description

Chicago Hardy Fig is the fig tree that defied expectations. While most figs are limited to warm climates, Chicago Hardy pushes the boundary — surviving winters in Zone 5 and even colder with proper protection, dying back in harsh conditions and reliably resending new growth from the roots each spring. Productive, drought-tolerant, self-pollinating, and beautiful on the patio, it’s one of the most rewarding and surprising fruit trees you can grow.

Sweet, Rich Figs From July Through Frost

Chicago Hardy produces medium-sized, brown to purple figs with fine-grained, sweet flesh the color of strawberry jam inside — rich, deeply flavored, and unlike anything from a grocery store. The tree bears on both old wood (early summer) and new growth (continuously from July through frost), giving you an extended harvest season that stretches well into autumn. Figs have been a beloved fruit since ancient times, and once you taste one fresh off your own tree, you’ll understand why.

More Than Just Fruit — An Edible Landscape Plant

Chicago Hardy earns its place in the landscape year-round. The bold, broad fig leaves are as attractive as they are useful — they can be used for grilling, steaming, and baking, where they impart a subtle smoky flavor to other foods, and dried leaves can be steeped into tea. The fruit itself is outstanding fresh, excellent for salads, cheese boards, and charcuterie, and easily preserved through drying, canning, and freezing. A rich source of fiber, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, and vitamins A and C.

Growing in Cooler Climates — What to Know

In Zone 7 and warmer, Chicago Hardy thrives in the ground with minimal intervention. In Zone 5–6, the top growth may die back in winter — but the insulated root system reliably sends up vigorous new growth each spring, and that new growth bears fruit the same season. Container growing opens it up to virtually any climate: grow it outdoors through summer and move it to a cool, dark, unheated space indoors for winter.

Overwintering tip: For in-ground trees in colder zones, insulate with chicken wire and burlap packed with leaves, or surround with straw bales. For potted trees, move to a cool basement or insulated garage and water monthly to keep roots from drying out completely.
