Hosui Asian Pear Tree
Description
Snappy, tangy taste. Produces excellent-quality fruit with a slightly higher acid content than other Asian pears. Tree is moderately vigorous with a slightly spreading nature. Fruit is sweet like a pear and crisp like an apple with lots of juice. Medium to large size fruit has an attractive golden-russet skin. Best for fresh-eating but also makes great pies! Introduced from Japan in the 1970s. Heat-tolerant. Ripens in late August. Self-pollinating, but will yield larger crops when pollinated with another variety like New Century. See more recommended pollinators below.

Questions & Answers
Fireblight took my Collette pear last year. My 2 Asian pears are 75 feet away and showed no signs. Keeping my fingers crossed though. They have been producing beautifully. Have had them for 6 or 7 years. Rick in Idaho.
I have had success with three varieties of Asian pears in upstate NY in zone 5b. The trees are over 10 years old. Some years they produce bumper crops and other years less but they always produce. My main problem is squirrels! They seem to love Asian pears.
They do keep well. Pick ripe unlike other pears and store cool and humid.
I have made preserves with them, pear sauce, and quarters in light syrup. All are fine but of course I think they are really best fresh. The sauce was a little gritty in texture and not it's best use. They also dry nicely but freezing is not a great choice as they tend to be mushy and gritty.
My soil is the same and doesn't drain very well, but i have 4 asian pear trees and they do great, especially if they are in full sun. I just mixed in some compost at planting to help with nutrients and drainage.
They make delicious pear butter. I like it best with no added spices.
Agreed with Randy. You will increase pollination success. If you're worried about space for two trees you can always prune them to stay small as you like with summer pruning.
Yes. Open center training enables you to develop 3 to 4 leaders that will spread all the vigor out over numerous primary branches verses one central leader. The growth habit of pears lends itself to this system because their growth is so upright.
We recommend a planting hole of at least 2' wide and 2' deep.
Hosui Asian pears generally prefer well-drained soil, and they can grow in sandy soil as long as it retains enough moisture and is rich in organic matter. Sandy soils tend to drain quickly, so you'll need to ensure the tree receives adequate water, especially during dry spells. Adding compost or other organic materials can help improve water retention and provide necessary nutrients. With proper care and regular watering, Hosui Asian pears can thrive in sandy soil.
Sorry, I cannot give you an answer. I am in Mass.
