Why did you choose this?

Nothing better than tender asparagus roasted on the grill.

been wanting to plant for years added on to garden this year

Good for cold climates in north

I ordered these 3 years ago and they are now coming in and I like the flavor and size. They seem to be quite plentiful in harvest and hardy in my climate. I'm going to try some more in another row.

My plants came covered in a white powder, just wondering what it is? Thanks!

This is called lime sulfer and it is put on the plants to prevent molding during shipping. You can wash off or plant with it on it will not harm the plants.

Are these three year crowns?

Thank you for your question. Our asparagus crowns come in a package of 10, which are one-year-old crowns.

will it grow in a raised bed?

As long as it has an open bottom--no landscaping cloth, etc. The roots go down at least 12' according to many books on the topic.

My plants came covered with a white powdery substance.  What is it and is it safe to have in my garden?

This is called lime sulfer and it is put on the plants to prevent molding during shipping. You can wash off or plant with it on it will not harm the plants.

How many asparagus root starts will I need to start a new bed?

If you are starting asparagus for the first time, we would plant 5 to 10 asparagus plants per person.

Do they come back year after year?

Yes they do! Make sure you weed early in the year and mulch with asparagus and they come back better each year! The Millennium comes back here in Northeastern Ohio just fine. I use chopped leaves in the fall to mulch, about two inches and then gardener's straw, the sticky stuff with no weed seeds, in the spring. Good luck!

will this work in Phoenix AZ  zone 9b?

Yes - This variety is compatible in all of zone 9.

Is it too late in the season to plant asparagus?

We appreciate you reaching out to us. Because weather and soil conditions vary so much from year to year and even within your zone, it's best to think of your planting time as a range of favorable conditions instead of an exact time.

You can plant new plants and trees:
1) when the ground is not frozen.
2) when daytime temperatures are above freezing (32ºF) and below 90ºF.
3) when extreme weather (blizzard, hail, torrential rain, etc.) is not in the forecast. Be sure to keep plants watered if you're transplanting in warm and/or dry weather.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!

Do deer eat these plants when mature?

Planted ours in 2 different areas on our new 3 acre property. Every root came up for 2 seasons now. Have deer every morning but they don't bother the asparagus.

why does it take three yrs to mature and do they spread on there own every year and make more plants?

These are 1 year crowns and they will not begin to produce for 3 years. They won't spread out much in the first couple of years, but once established, they will quickly fill in.

5 Stars - Robust Millennium Asparagus Crowns!
I purchased bare root Millennium asparagus crowns from StarkBros.com, and they arrived in excellent condition-plump, firm, and ready to plant. You can tell they were freshly packed and handled with care.

I planted them in a well-prepped bed, and they took off quickly! Within just a couple of weeks, I started seeing healthy green spears popping through. I chose Millennium for its cold hardiness and high yields, and so far, it's living up to the hype.

Very happy with Stark Bros once again-their bare root quality is top-notch, and these asparagus crowns are a strong start to what I hope will be a long-lasting asparagus patch.

All of my fruit trees and bushes have been Stark Bros. purchases and are doing very well.
For just being planted they seem to be doing well. I am hoping for some nice production of spears in a couple of years.

All plants are growing and happy!
All plants came up. They are really skinny, but I suppose that is to be expected the first year. I look forward to many years of delicious eating. One of the hardest parts was deciding where to plant them since they will be there for many seasons.

Vigorous Asparagus Bare Root
It's been a year since the bare root asparagus was planted. So far I haven't harvested enough at one time to make a meal. But the stalks are growing tall and making seeds. I keep them watered since they are exposed all day to hot SoCal sun.
