Why did you choose this?

Ordered last year. Really good and big. Every bare root produced onions!

Great onions

I love candy onions and I was excited to see that Stark Bro's carried these onion starts and I could just add them to my order of other things rather than having to find another place to order the…

how well do Candy Hybrid onions store and how should you store them ?

I have grown candy hybrid for two seasons and find that they keep for me till may. First season I stored in the basement in flat boxes, single layer but there was too much humidity and I lost most due to rot. The second season I stored in the cooler area of my pantry in cardboard flat boxes in a single layer. I am losing some due to sprouting, but not rot. Make sure to check periodically to remove bad ones. When I start losing some I dice, tray freeze and then vacuum seal. Also at the first round of harvesting I dice, tray freeze and then vacuum pack. I have used one seasons for two winters. I like this onion for is ease in growing, storing and taste (fresh or frozen).

how to store?

In a cool dry dark place. I store them in my pantry in a wire basket with a
cloth insert. You will need to let them cure for 2-4 weeks on paper before storing.

Do you leave tops on or cut them off when storing?

After the tops were dry, I cut them off for storage. I kept them in a crate my husband made out of wood and hardware cloth.

are these seeds or sets?

They are small onion plants. About 8 inches of green growth on a small onion

How far from each other approximately should you plant these?

I planted mine around 4 inches apart but i harvested some throughout the summer. So by fall the ones that i had left were around 6-8 inches which allowed them to grow to a larger size. I hope this helps.

Is this a short or long day onion?

It is definitely not a long day onion as i never plant long day onions in Arizona and I have had success with the Candy Hybrid.

How long will plants keep “before planting”
?

Onion sets can be stored for several months to a year, depending on storage conditions. However, it's best not to store them for more than two years.
Storage tips
Store onion sets in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place
Put them in a mesh bag to allow for air circulation
Check them regularly for rot or damage
Remove any sets that are starting to go bad
Avoid storing them in basements, which can be damp
Planting tips
Plant onion sets in spring for bulb onions and for green or bunching onions
Planting too early, with exposure to cold temperatures, can cause seed stalk development
Water thoroughly after planting, and regularly thereafter
Don't let the soil at the base of the plants become dry and cracked
If leaves develop a yellow tinge, cut back on watering
When the onion tops start falling over, stop watering and let the soil dry

Why is my region shipping prohibited?

Unfortunately this happens to be a product that has state or county agricultural regulations, which prohibit shipment. Sometimes there are local/regional quarantines put in place to halt the spread of certain plant diseases, which does not happen often. While these regulations may change in the near future, we apologize that we cannot ship this item to you at the present time.

Is this a storage variety?

To the best of my knowledge, intermediate-day onions store for a maximum of three months, but storage types (also known as Long Day Onions) will last throughout the winter.

Great tasting sweet onion
I order these onion plants every year. I have had better success with these onions compared to growing Walla Walla onions as the candy seem to be more resistant to diseases. I usually plant them in early March as soon as they arrive(they are very cold tolerant) and they get to be a good size by July. Though they are pricy the onions are a good value. The bunches include many more onions than stated and at 6" apart I can grow about 40 feet of row per bunch.

Growing season ending too quick
I would go with Texas sweet instead. I had those last year and they did great. Tried these - the tops are falling over before they get very big - it's only june. And half a dozen are going to seed. I have a soakers house system so they are getting regular water. I was hoping for a big crop. The taste is good.

I had trouble but they might have been too wet? I have great luck with most everything I’ve bought at Stark brothers. I never complained about this because honestly I have never grown onions before. And they stand by everything I’ve ever gotten.

Not good this year
This is my third year planting this variety. The 2 groupings I received were poor. About half were very small and didn't survive. Planted as my usual and only half are still alive. The two previous years were excellent. I am disappointed in what was sent this year. The quality I have come to expect from Stark Bros. just wasn't there.
