Description

About the Royal Purple Smokebush

An award-winning, dramatic smokebush! The Royal Purple Smokebush is an attractive, deciduous shrub that is prized as a colorful landscape accent. Maroon-red, oval leaves emerge in early spring and mature to a deep purple for the rest of the growing season. By fall, the rounded purple leaves turn scarlet.

Smokebush or Cotinus coggygria are known for their showy panicles. In spring, tiny flowers bloom and mature to dusty pink, feathery plumes. These dramatic, airy flowers give a ‘smokey’ appearance during the summer months.

Growing a Royal Purple Smokebush

The long-lasting display of flowers and color make this ornamental a lovely specimen for sophisticated gardens in both residential and commercial properties. The Royal Purple Smokebush, sometimes referred to as a ‘smoketree’ has an upright growth habit that spreads with age.

Royal Purple is an adaptable shrub that can tolerate dry and poor soils once established, however, it does not like to grow in wet soils. Plant this smokebush in full sun for the best results. Free of major pest or disease concerns and tolerant to deer, this shrub is sure to thrive while providing seasonal interest to your landscape.

Great color.
So far, so good. I planted the smoke bush outside my front door and so far the deer and grasshoppers haven't destroyed it. I purchased another one about five years ago and planted it outside my library; it's absolutely gorgeous. This western Colorado climate is rough and this is a very hot year. Well see.

The Long Run
Slow growing and limited leaf production so far. Good news is the deer haven't decided to eat the new growth leaves this spring and does seem to tolerate dry windy locations.
