About Chinese Pistache Trees

Pistacia chinensis, commonly called Chinese Pistache, is a fast-growing deciduous tree that delivers vibrant fall color, four-season interest, and excellent drought tolerance. This landscape tree quickly matures into a beautiful, umbrella-shaped shade tree—ideal for streetscapes, patios, and open garden designs.

Renowned for its spectacular autumn foliage in vivid shades of red, orange, and gold, this tree also features fine, glossy green summer leaves and bark that peels to reveal striking salmon tones in winter. In spring, greenish flower clusters emerge before the leaves, with female trees producing ornamental red-to-blue berries that attract birds.

Native to parts of Asia and a member of the cashew family, the Chinese Pistache typically reaches 30–35 feet tall and 20–30 feet wide, developing quickly with proper sun and care. It is cold-hardy to Zone 6, highly tolerant of heat, air pollution, and drought, and virtually pest- and disease-free—making it a low-maintenance favorite for homeowners and urban planners alike.

Growing Tips for Chinese Pistache

Plant in full sun for optimal canopy development and bold fall color. This adaptable tree grows well in a range of soil types—including clay, loam, or sand—and tolerates acidic to alkaline conditions. Once established, it’s remarkably drought-tolerant and requires little care. Prune young trees to encourage a strong, symmetrical form. Resistant to most pests and diseases, though susceptible to verticillium wilt in poorly drained soils.
