Description

A hardy and reliable maple tree with lasting fall color!

The October Glory® Maple is an outstanding deciduous tree that provides interest and shade to larger landscapes. With glistening dark green leaves in the spring and summer, turning radiant orange and red in late fall, lasting several weeks. Foliage is held on to the tree later into fall than with most cultivars – even providing fall colors in warmer climates!

October Glory® is a fast-growing tree with a dense, rounded crown. This maple tree is tolerant of many soils but prefers slightly acid and moist conditions. Plant in partial shade to full sun.

Is it a strong tree in wind?

At palanting these trees are small and will require staking if you are planting in a windy area.

What is the largest  tree that can be purchased?

Currently this variety is out of stock so I do not know what sizes will be available in spring. I recommend signing up for the product notification, once it becomes available you will be notified by email and at that time sizes available will be listed as well.

Does it get whirlybirds?

Like most maple trees, October Glory Maples do have “helicopter seeds” that fall each autumn.

When is the best time to plant October glory maple tree?

We appreciate you reaching out to us. Because weather and soil conditions vary so much from year to year and even within your zone, it's best to think of your planting time as a range of favorable conditions instead of an exact time.

You can plant new plants and trees:
1) when the ground is not frozen.
2) when daytime temperatures are above freezing (32ºF) and below 90ºF.
3) when extreme weather (blizzard, hail, torrential rain, etc.) is not in the forecast. Be sure to keep plants watered if you're transplanting in warm and/or dry weather.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!

When should it start blooming? Zone 5

Not sure what you mean by "blooming". If you are concerned about when that spindly twig will leaf out and create a nice canopy, mine is in it's second year and is taking a nice shape and size even though I don't have the best soil here, SE Nebraska.

Do I plant it in sum or in shade?

They like Partial shade to full sun.

Does this tree have helicopter seeds?

I don’t believe they do. Mine has had any. This is the third year I’ve had mine. They’re very pretty trees

Which maple tree would produce maple sap for syrup in zone 9a?

All maples (except Norway M ) produce sap. Sugar Maples are more traditionally used for maple sugaring. This October Glory is a variety of Red maple and would probably be better for your Zone.

How to protect from deer?

Protecting your October Glory Maple Tree from deer is important—especially in its early years when it's most vulnerable. Deer love tender bark and new growth, and they can do serious damage by browsing or rubbing their antlers. Here are a few effective ways to keep them away:

1. Use a Tree Guard or Trunk Wrap
Plastic tree guards or spiral wraps help prevent deer from rubbing their antlers against the bark.

Install from the base up to at least 4–5 feet high.

Leave it on through fall and winter, but be sure to remove or adjust it in spring to avoid girdling as the tree grows.

2. Install a Physical Barrier
Deer fencing: Set up a fence around the tree about 6–8 feet tall (they can jump high!).

Cage the tree: Use welded wire or mesh fencing in a cylinder around the tree (at least 4 feet in diameter) and secure with stakes.

Leave space between the tree and fence to allow growth.

3. Apply Deer Repellents
Use a commercial deer repellent spray (like Liquid Fence, Plantskydd, or Bobbex) on the leaves and around the base.

Reapply every few weeks, especially after rain.

These repellents use scents or tastes deer dislike (usually garlic, egg solids, or hot pepper).
4. Try Motion-Activated Deterrents
Devices like motion-activated sprinklers or lights can startle and deter deer from coming near your tree.

How is it packaged?

It is shipped with wet paper around the roots.

Bare root trees- don't shy away
Planted it as a bare root tree in March in Jacksonville FL. Followed their guidance and the tree now has several leaf clusters and is healthy and thriving.

Great tree!
I just recently purchased this tree and am thrilled with it. It came as most do, no leaves and dormant, but as soon as I got it in the ground it started looking great. Within a week it had leaves and after a few months it has been on of my favorite new trees. I live in Southern Alabama so I look forward to seeing if it eventually produces those beautiful colors in the fall, but I'll still be happy with this tree even if I don't get many colors. I plan on getting a second.
