About the Princeton Sentry® Ginkgo

The Princeton Sentry® Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba ‘Princeton Sentry’) is a slim and stately ornamental tree, renowned for its unique fan-shaped leaves and stunning fall color. This male selection of Ginkgo boasts dark green foliage that turns a brilliant yellow in autumn, dropping almost at once to blanket your landscape in golden hues. Its tight, vertical shape makes it an excellent choice for any landscape, serving as a powerful focal point or lining streets with its tough constitution. With no messy fruit and a pest-free nature, this long-lived tree is a true legacy plant.

How to Grow Princeton Sentry® Ginkgo Trees

Princeton Sentry® Ginkgo thrives in full sun and is adaptable to a variety of soil conditions, making it a versatile choice for many settings. Water deeply when the top 2 inches of soil are dry to establish a strong root system. This tree grows slowly, eventually reaching a mature height of 40 to 50 feet and a width of 20 to 25 feet, forming a compact pyramid shape. Its resilience to urban environments and exceptional fall color make it ideal for use as a street tree or in tight spaces.

Ideal for USDA zones 3-8, the Princeton Sentry® Ginkgo is not only beautiful but also incredibly durable, able to withstand harsh conditions and pests. Its unique fan-like leaves and luminous yellow fall color create a striking visual impact, while its historical significance and longevity add a touch of heritage to your landscape.

7 Questions
Why did you choose this?

We love this tree in our neighbor's yard and would like to have it in our own yard.

Always wanted a ginko, and not a tiny seedling. Looking forward to it!

Always wanted a gingko 🥰

Need a narrow tree near driveway that is easy to grow and has fall color.

Is this a grafted tree?

No this is not a grafted tree.

Are they male or female ginkgo?

This is the male variety.

Our ginkgo tree has leaves completely covering the  branches from the trunk all the way out to tips. Is this normal?

Yes. I have planted and tended three (3) over the past 12 years, and they start slow, but once they are established, they produce a very erect tree with symmetrical branches. That is why they were named "Sentinenal" and why they were used to border military parade grounds. They are a very stately addition to your garden.

Is Princeton Sentry Ginko safe to grow near septic systems and house foundation(non invasive root system).  Is it dog "safe" (no parts of tree toxic)?

You should Plant about 20 feet away from any structures, utility lines or septic systems. And it is not toxic to humans and pets

Can it survive in zone 9B?
Has there been any success with this tree or other Ginko's from places in the norther plains, such as North Dakota?

Ginkgo tree
The Ginko Tree came very well packaged and dormant. I was not able to plant it before the winter so I removed the plastic over the tree and kept it watered. I was uncertain it was still alive at the end of February, but all of a sudden bright green leaves popped out and it is healthy and hearty. Thank you Stark Nursery for good stock!
