About The Scarlet Oak Tree

A native oak with stunning red fall foliage!

The Scarlet Oak (Quercus coccinea), also called Black Oak, Red Oak, or Spanish Oak is best known for its brilliant autumn color. It is a medium-sized shade tree with a straight trunk and a rounded, open crown. It is a fast-growing tree native to the Eastern United States forests, found in Maine and New York down south as far as Florida, and as west as Missouri.

Growing up to 60-80ft. tall, this landscape specimen serves as a good lawn and street tree, with shiny green, lobed leaves in the summer that turn scarlet red in the fall. Scarlet Oak is hardy and adaptable to many soil types. It’s quickly becoming a popular choice for those who want seasonal interest in their landscapes!

Is this tree heat tolerant and or drought resistant?

Your respond below indicates it will tolerate alkaline soil, whereas this response suggests it will grow in a wide range of soils EXCEPT alkaline, which is contraditory. I'm in 9B with alkaline soil. Will this grow here in Phoenix?

Does this tree have top of the ground roots?  How far from concrete should it be planted?

Although scarlet oak has a predominant tap root, it does have some spreading lateral roots, The lateral roots may appear above the soil surface as they increase in diameter. Trees over 50 feet tall should be planted at least 7 to 8 feet from the sidewalk or driveway.
