I had Carpathian walnut trees and the nut husks had maggots in them by harvest time. I want to plant walnut trees at our new home. What can be used to prevent this?
Anderson-Fisk L on Apr 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: They were most likely walnut husk fly larvae. Bonide?? Captain Jack's??? Deadbug Brew Garden Dust (found here: http://www.starkbros.com/products/tools-and-supplies/pest-and-disease-control/bonide-captain-jacks-deadbug-brew-garden-dust ) lists this as a pests it controls.
how old is tree?

BEST ANSWER: Most all of our trees are two years old at shipping time.
do walnut trees require srays - are there any bugs or diseases that might usually affect them? we are in zip code 14424
Theresa Z on Feb 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The usual garden pests, like aphids, mites, and moths can affect walnut trees as well. This varies by environment, but your local experts will be able to advise you more specifically. While your walnut trees are small, you can use a spray recommended for walnut trees (like dormant oil). Once they're too large to spray, the trees will likely be able to withstand pests as long as they're healthy and not severely stressed by weather or other environmental factors.

Fruiting the first year.
I was pleased with the condition that I received the trees last fall, but I was amazed that my English Walnut tree is already fruiting in its first year.

So far so good!
I purchased this walnut tree fro Stark Brothers based on a recommendation from a local nursery. Of course they are small when you get them and walnut trees mature and grow slowly. However, both (I got another type too) are growing and are healthy. I have high hopes that in years to come I will have beautiful walnut trees!

Looking good
Okay my husband loves English walnuts so much that after the stores stop selling them for the holidays we have to order them online! So I thought we would try growing them. I planted two of them last year. This spring they look GREAT, they have grown and look really healthy. He is looking forward to having his own stash of walnuts once they start bearing!!!

Hardy growers
It's been a year since planted , both trees are growing like weeds . A foot growth on one so far . And a foot and and a half on the other . It's been a cool rainy spring with some days hitting 80 degrees . I expect more growth thru June . No fertilizer yet . Will give them some in the fall .

Good purchase
Trees received were very stocky. Grew very well even with the hotter than normal weather in May 2015. Growing strong so far this year.

great trees
So far the trees are growing well and they arrived healthy. It will be a while before I can taste the fruits (nuts) of my labor and purchase. Check back with me in 3-4 years. An investment for the future. I have 2 almond trees and they produce well, but the labor to get a handful of nuts is extensive. In contrast I love cracking walnuts.

Unbelievable growers!
I bought these trees knowing that Stark provides the best fruit and nut trees available. I have bought many other trees previously from Stark, but these two English Walnuts have really impressed me. I'm growing them in Tubex Combi tree shelters. In two years, one is near 8 foot tall already and the other is closing in on 6 foot tall. I have only been fertilizing with composted manure. It's a pleasure to watch these babies grow, and I can't wait to gather, crack, and enjoy some walnuts that I grew!

English Walnut trees
We love our English Walnut trees that we purchase from Stark Brothers. We usually only buy these walnuts at Holidays. Now we have our own. Last year we got our first crop, boy are they good. We definitely recommend these trees. Even our baby walnut trees tried to grow nuts this year. But it wasn't old enough, so they fell off until it is older. Makes a nice shade tree too. Thank you.

Growing well in difficult conditions
I planted 2 in a patch in my forest. Last summer was very hot and dry without rain for weeks. I'm amazed they survived with only 2x watering in 2 month dry stretch while other trees that were established failed. I'm very happy how they are growing in poor soil and extreme weather conditions. I can't say much about fruit as it's been 2 years since I planted them.
