BEST ANSWER: It's a good idea to remove the glass tube - if it fills with water and freezes, the glass could break. There's no need to remove the whole gauge.

Beautiful Vermont Rain Gauge
We have had the Vermont Rain Gauge about a year now. It was easy to install, looks great, is easy to read and made of quality materials. We have had several rain gauges over the years. But the Vermont is in a class by itself. Thank you.

Not as represented.
I bought this because the catalog implied that the glass insert was made of extra thick glass that would not freeze. The package material with the gauge said otherwise and the glass could not be used during freezing conditions (I live in the mountains of Colorado). I turned the glass upside down during the winter to prevent freezing but by spring all of the markings on the glass had worn and made it useless. It is a nice base that now contains glass from a cheap Walmart gauge.
