Can I grow the blueberry heirloom collection in 5 gallon buckets?
Holistic I on Mar 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: probably not, because the 5 gallon container is too small for a sweetheart blueberry to grow properly. the root system would overrun the container size and the plant would most likely die. if you put it in an 25 gallon container it would do much better, although you would have to prune the root system every 3-4 years or so as for not to have the root system become too congestive in the container. stark brothers nursery does have the patio northcounty and patio northblue blueberries that are design for container for they only get 2-3 feet tall, and 2-3 feet wide and will usually produce approximately 1-2 quarts of blueberries per season per plant. the stark brothers nursery personnel will direct you if you need additional information for they are the experts. hope it helps.
How old are the plants in the gallon bucket? How old are the 4"?
Heidi S on Jan 18, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question. The age and size information for our blueberries is as follows: 3.5??? pot: 6-12 months old and 4??? tall small gallon container: 2 years old and 12??? tall.

My 7 year old Stark blueberry plants are doing beautifully. The group I planted last summer- 2 out of three seem to be doing well. The third just didn't make it through last summer for some reason. That explains my not quite 5 star review.

Excellent!
All three bushes are doing well, they are growing vigorously and each have a few berries on them. It looks like I'm going to have to get some netting over them soon if I want to keep the birds from beating me to the harvest.

Highly recommended. My Blueberry collection is thriving in 15 gallon pots. Year 3 has gotten me a few handfuls from each bush, Year five is Blueberry avalanche! I have been using Stark Bros blueberry food and add a little compost and peat each season. These are my easiest food plants to care for.

Rough years for blueberries
We grew a patch of eight blueberry plants with with no problems and great success for seventeen years during the late 1980s, through the turn of the millennium. Our new patch has not fared so well with recent years of alternating severe droughts and floods. Only four of twelve blueberry bushes we have planted during the past decade survived and flourished. One plant from the Heirloom Collection is doing well.
