Can I grow the blueberry heirloom collection in 5 gallon buckets?

BEST ANSWER: You can start with 5-gallon buckets, but, as the plants mature, you may need to pot-up to a larger container size to accommodate the root systems. Keep in mind: blueberries are shallow-rooted plants, so a wider container is better than a deep one.

Tiny plants in rough shape
I love every tree purchase made from starks, but the blueberry plants sent to me were just shameful. All 3 were so tiny and beat up. They had already been out of dormancy but had lost most of their leaves before arriving to me. Took an entire summer just to coax them back to life and grow a few leaves - miraculously they survived the winter and are looking better in year 2.

Highly recommended. My Blueberry collection is thriving in 15 gallon pots. Year 3 has gotten me a few handfuls from each bush, Year five is Blueberry avalanche! I have been using Stark Bros blueberry food and add a little compost and peat each season. These are my easiest food plants to care for.

Tiny and beat up
I decided to "upgrade" to the one gallon containers to hopefully accelerate my results. The plants arrived tiny, with roots only in the very center. Many of the plants were less than 6" tall in a one gallon container. Clearly 4" pot plants were put in a one gallon container in the fall as the roots didn't come close to reaching the edge of the container. I ordered 8 different varieties of blueberries and for what I paid, I was disappointed. All of the trees from Stark have exceeded expectations, these blueberries were not up to the level I expect from Stark. Just buy the small ones as that is all you will get.

All of our 1 gallon small Stark containers have a ship height specification of 4-18 inches tall with a well rooted root system. . Excellent!
All three bushes are doing well, they are growing vigorously and each have a few berries on them. It looks like I'm going to have to get some netting over them soon if I want to keep the birds from beating me to the harvest.

Blueberry collection
I've been buying my blueberries from Stark for many years. The plants are healthy and the one guarantee helps in case of a hard winter. My plants grew to 7 ft. tall. The variety pack is the way to go.

Rough years for blueberries
We grew a patch of eight blueberry plants with with no problems and great success for seventeen years during the late 1980s, through the turn of the millennium. Our new patch has not fared so well with recent years of alternating severe droughts and floods. Only four of twelve blueberry bushes we have planted during the past decade survived and flourished. One plant from the Heirloom Collection is doing well.

My 7 year old Stark blueberry plants are doing beautifully. The group I planted last summer- 2 out of three seem to be doing well. The third just didn't make it through last summer for some reason. That explains my not quite 5 star review.
