Description
Carefree beauty with edible appeal. Vigorous plants have glossy green foliage and in May they develop large white flower-heads. If not harvested first for fritters, tea, or wine, elderflowers develop into exceptional, large fruit clusters in the summer.
Fruit contains a high amount of vitamin C and has better, consistent quality than wild elderberries. Cold-hardy. Ripens in August. Best pollinator: any other elderberry variety.
Note: Elderberries must be cooked before consumption. Consuming fresh elderberries can be toxic. Please ensure all berries are properly prepared before use.

Yes in large quantities... the stems.. leaves and seeds have small quantities of cyanide and if consumed in large quantities can cause a buildup in the body's system and make you quite ill. Nausea vomiting and diarrhea are symptoms. Seek medical treatment if severe. Recovery is usually quick. Cooking the berries removes the the issue. All other parts are inedible. There are many good sites available online for more specific details on the different varieties.
The question probably doesn't mean will elderberries hurt walnuts (as a previous person answered), but instead can elderberries survive in the vicinity of walnuts, which produce juglone compounds that kill many plants. I don't have any experience myself, but I googled "elderberry juglone" and elderberries were included on a list of juglone-tolerant plants, so I would expect you are ok to plant one near the other...
Elderberries are a solo plants that do produce shoots (rarely more than 6" from their base) like the hybrid blueberries, but they are no where near as dense, and are not invasive. They do best in damp soil. They love water. I've a few that have their bases under water in my pond! Thin stalks apex to a staggered green canopy that is the home of all of their fruit.

'Adams' is a cultivar of native Sambucus canadensis. It is one of the most common elderberries grown in North America and is similar to those found growing wild.

I think by the time i got my two plants a couple of years ago it was pretty late in the season (mid June to bee xact). I didn't water mine as well as i should have, but two years later one of the two (not sure which) is thriving and the other is doing fine (it almost died). I think as long as you water it well it should be fine. Mine is planted in filtered sunlight/shade. Zone 9 (alabama)
No they don't have to be near water if you can supply water during times of drought.
They do live native by streams because they aren't drought tolerant, but if you can supply water, there is no problem!

Elderberries produce best in full sun; maybe what you understood is that they can STILL be productive, even in partial shade. Very few fruiting trees/plants will produce in partial shade.
