We wanted a vintage selection so that we can design the planting to appear as if it's original to the property. Also, we believe strongly in providing for the pollinators.

I am interested in heirlooms and just starting with a backyard orchard. I'm going to begin with the hard prune at about 18 inches and try to grow a little fruit tree as per the book of the same title.

Will this package of 3 pollinate together? Or do I need to purchase a Golden Delicious?
Madison L on Apr 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The collection is especially selected so that the apples pollinate one another. You do not need an additional tree.
hello, Here in central Kentucky we have a difficult time growing apple trees--what with diseases, late frosts etc. We've thought about trying some Heirlooms that grow better in the southern humidity. We also have observed Standard size trees doing well in this area with no care. Is there any correlation and do you have any southern heirlooms in a standard size? Thank you
denise on Apr 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It might be a combination of things (variety, planting location, rootstock, etc.) that make the standard size trees seem to do well where other sizes do not. I can't think of a specific reason for the discrepancy otherwise. We don't have a lot of "southern friendly" apple trees yet, but we list our heat-tolerant varieties here: ??? Another option you might be able to find locally is a series of old southern apple trees called "Limbertwig". Good luck!

Antique Treasures Collection
I planted my 3-tree Antique Treasures Collection last fall, and so far the Orleans and Ben Davis have been growing as expected. However, the Orange Pippin is in decline. I don't know if it will make it through one year. They are all planted in the same environmental conditions and within 30 feet of each other, so that's not the problem. I am happy with 2/3 of the purchased product, and I don't know what to do about the other third.

My apple trees arrived in great shape and are all growing. I can't wait until they start bearing!
I've always had excellent plants when I've ordered from Stark Bros Nursery. I've visited the nursery once and hopefully will be able to visit again soon!

Sent as a Gift
I had to contact my brother in Michigan regarding these trees. His Response was "they are growing like crazy. They were fenced the same time they were planted so the deer have not bothered them".

Antique Treasures Apple Collection
My antique treasures collection - Cox’s Orange, Orleans, and Ben Davis - was planted spring of 2018. All are thriving and looking healthy. Also planted a Golden Russet at the same time, which is also doing well. Obviously, it will be a few years before I can report with a real evaluation. Biggest threats to the viability of trees on my farm are rabbits and deer. It takes about 10 years for a semi dwarf tree to develop enough bark on the main stem to be safe from these vermin.

Critters liked them
The deer ate all the new growth last summer Then the lemmings ate the bark under the snow. Looking grim for this one year anniversary....other than that we are pleased.
