Description

Jonagold is one of the most celebrated apple crosses ever developed — a Jonathan × Golden Delicious pairing from Cornell University’s breeding program at Geneva, New York, selected in 1953 and introduced in 1968, that brings together the bright, refreshing tang of Jonathan and the rich, mellow sweetness of Golden Delicious into a single large, crisp, juicy apple of genuine dessert quality. Complex, balanced, and deeply satisfying, it ripens in mid-September and remains a standout choice for flavor-focused home orchards. Organic options available.

Jonathan × Golden Delicious — Complex Dessert-Quality Flavor

Jonagold’s flavor is what it’s famous for — and with good reason. The bright tanginess inherited from Jonathan combines with the rich golden sweetness of Golden Delicious to create a balanced, complex profile that’s more interesting than either parent alone. The large, crisp, juicy fruit has a well-rounded character that makes it outstanding for fresh eating, and it holds for short to mid-term storage after harvest, extending the season’s enjoyment.

Cornell University, Geneva, New York — 1953

Jonagold comes from one of the most respected apple breeding programs in the world. Developed at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, New York — the same program responsible for Cortland, Empire, Macoun, and many other beloved varieties — it was selected in 1953 and introduced in 1968. More than 70 years of continuous home orchard performance validates the flavor quality that earned it its reputation at introduction.

Important: Jonagold is a triploid variety and cannot pollinate other apple trees. It requires at least two different compatible diploid apple varieties planted nearby to set fruit.
