About the York Imperial Apple Tree
Known as the “Imperial of Keepers,” the York Imperial Apple Tree has been prized for generations for its exceptional storage ability and rich, balanced flavor. First discovered near York, Pennsylvania around 1830, this heirloom variety produces medium-to-large apples with a distinctive lop-sided shape, setting it apart in both appearance and taste.
The fruit has firm, dense, and juicy flesh with a sweet-tart flavor that mellows and improves with storage — often becoming more complex after a month in cool conditions. Its versatility makes it a favorite for baking, applesauce, cider, jams, drying, and fresh eating.
This cold-hardy tree ripens in October, producing a reliable harvest that’s well-suited for long-term enjoyment. While not disease-immune, it shows moderate resistance to fire blight and performs reliably in a wide range of conditions. A pollinator is required for fruit production (see recommended pollinators below).
How to Grow the York Imperial Apple Tree
Plant in full sun with well-draining soil. Best suited for Zones 4–8. Space trees 12–16 feet apart and water consistently during dry spells. Annual pruning will help maintain airflow and promote fruit quality. Harvest in early to mid-fall when the apples begin to blush red over their golden base.
With its old-fashioned charm and legendary keeping quality, the York Imperial remains a trusted choice for home orchards and bakers alike. Its flavor deepens with time, making it a true heirloom apple worth waiting for.
