With its impeccable fruit, modest size, and dependable yield, the Simmonds Avocado Tree is a top choice for home gardeners. This avocado tree brings beauty to your yard with its stylish look – glossy leaves and a neat shape that fits anywhere. Not too big, reaching 20-25 feet tall and 10-15 feet wide, it loves soaking up the sun.
These avocados, around 16-30 ounces each, have smooth, green skin that’s like a hint of the deliciousness inside. Slice one open to find creamy, yellow flesh that’s just perfect – not too oily, not too nutty. And the taste? Rich, smooth, and so satisfying. They ripen from July to September, enjoy fresh guacamole for months!
The Simmonds Avocado Tree has a storied heritage that dates to 1908 when it sprouted from a Pollock seed in Washington D.C. The United States Department of Agriculture recognized its potential and sent it back to Miami in 1913, where it flourished and bore fruit for the first time. By 1923, it was aptly named after Edward Simmonds, a visionary behind the USDA’s Plant Introduction program.
How to Grow the Simmonds Avocado Tree
Avocado trees are dense, evergreen trees that grow fast in tropical climates. ‘Simmonds’ is south Florida’s most popular early season avocado. They prefer mild temperatures, good draining soil, humidity, and 6 hours of sun.
With its incredible cold hardiness down to 35°F, this Persea Americana variety thrives where others won’t, providing you with an opportunity to indulge in the rich flavor and healthy goodness of avocados. Even if space is limited, the Simmonds Avocado can thrive in containers, gracing your space with both beauty and bounty.
Avocado trees are self-pollinating and you’ll get a nice harvest with just one tree. They don’t require another variety in order to produce fruit. However, having a Type A and Type B avocado tree increases the chance of successful pollination and fruit set. Simmonds is a type A.
