I like yellow roses, and wanted a climber to go with a Henryii white clematis. Who could resist "Smiley Face"?

Paula B on Jun 1, 2016
I chose the Smiley Face Climbing Rose because I think it will look terrific against my neighbor's stark white vinyl privacy fence that blinds me whenever I look out my window. I chose a yellow rose to compliment my Judy Zuk Magnolia Tree (yellow blooms). It's a tiny yard, so I think consistent color will calm the visual space. I'm in Zone 6a with loamy, well-drained soil and full sun, so these should be happy in their new home.

smiley face yellow roses is it thornless?
missy n on Mar 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No. I have this exact rose and it does have thorns. Typically, if it doesn't say thornless, assume it will have thorns.
I have a wire fence that is five foot high. I wanted to plant some of these roses along the fence line in the hopes that it will spread out along the fence. do you think this rose is a good variety for this purpose?
Janine N on May 4, 2019
BEST ANSWER: These roses are awesome, I planted mine on an arbor that is over 12 ft high, in the first year they had grown almost to the top, the next year they covered it, would recommend these roses to anyone, they are beautiful, grow fast & bloom all summer/
Is this a fast grower?
Carl B on Mar 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hi Carl. Of course it depends where you live (general climate) and where you
intend to plant it (microenvironment). I planted it along a fence in Philadelphia.
It took a while to get started, but was doing quite well by the end of summer. I would not call it a fast grower in comparison with rugosa type roses, but I would say it established well in the first year and looks quite happy where it is. I kept it watered well after transplanting because we had a dry spell, so I think early care is important. Good luck.

How large are the blooms?
Sonia on Sep 1, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I measured a fully open bloom today at 3 inches and a bud at a little over 1 inch.
Do they have fragrance?
Kyung V on Aug 5, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, a light, pleasant fragrance.
When should I prune my smiley face climbing rose?
Gismo on Feb 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I generally prune mine early spring only if needed and again after second bloom. Have done very little pruning in this. I love this climber. Needs protection from rabbits also
Does it have a strong rose scent?
Christy S on Jun 19, 2019
BEST ANSWER: No, the roses don't have a scent.
How soon before this blooms?
Marcia M on Nov 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It bloomed the same year i bought it.
Can these bloom year round?
T K on Jun 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I can say in zone 8b it stays green in a mild winter but doesn't flower though it will rebloom all growing season.
How long does it bloom ?
Kennth J on Jun 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Mine are in there third season. Already blooming. Just covering a 10' fence.

I have to admit I am not sure when blooms stop for last summer was the first season of blooms. As a guess I would say late summer.

Also go on line and source rose by name. I think it will say late summer. Again I am pretty sure on this. Strong healthy plants with very good disease resistance. Do spray with a disease resistant spray even though I have never seen any sign of disease on these plants.

Jeff
bees attraction to smile face roses?
Faye P on Mar 4, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Bees would be as attracted to this rose as they are other roses, but there are flowers that some bees prefer over roses in general. The cup-like shape this rose takes on when it is in full bloom is one that bees prefer, since they don't have to work as hard to gather pollen.
Is this rose a repeat bloomer OR just spring and fall?
Kathy F on Sep 9, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Repeat bloomer.
how fragrant is it?
Linda S on May 21, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Smiley Face has a slight fragrance that is a little spicy. On a scale of 1 to 10, it's about a 4.
Will this rose grow in a western facing direction in zone 5?
Miriam S on Jan 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This rose is zoned for 6-9, so you would be risking root-freeze, even with a western-facing location. If you're looking for a more cold-hardy yellow rose (which is virtually maintenance-free), you might look at this one: //www.starkbros.com/products/garden-plants/roses/sunny-knock-out-rose
I bought two of these roses and planted them in early June I saw my first flower Tuesday August 15 today I noticed it turned white, is that supposed to happen?
Paula B on Aug 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Sometimes colors fade as they mature. My Geese ate my smiley face rose! I have other roses where this happens.

Exceeding my expectations!
I planted three last fall and those wintered over beautifully, so I completed the bed with three more this spring. The three I planted last fall have buds on them- several each! All six roses have bright green, broad leaves and healthy, flexible canes. I am beyond please with these gorgeous plants. They looked brilliant when they arrived- I commented that they were some of the healthiest plants I've bought anywhere- and they continue to delight. So pretty!

beautiful climbing rose
We planted Smiley face Climbing Rose a year ago. Nice rose! We got a few blooms last year, but it's really taking off this year. If you have a place for it, do yourself a favor and get this rose.

Smiley Face Climbing Rose
It took two growing seasons for this rose to establish itself, but now that it has, this season's blooms are spectacular. Smiley Face is the perfect name.

Good so far.
I ordered a few of these. They all came in good shape. Two were trampled by my dogs a few months after planting and one unfortunately died but the other survived from being broke off at the ground, so I'd say they are pretty strong.

Gorgeous and Growing!
We have seen our little rose bush grow a lot in the first few months, and we now have maybe 5-10 blooms right now! We are trellising it up the steps from our backyard patio to our screened in porch, and I think it will be a show stopper in a couple years. (Disclaimer: I am not an expert at tending roses by any means, but it seems to be taking care of itself!)
