Description

About the Autumn Brilliance® Serviceberry Tree

Planted for both as an ornamental and for its edible fruit, the Autumn Brilliance® Serviceberry is a treasured tree for all seasons. Named for its notable fall color, Autumn Brilliance® is just as spectacular in the spring, with its abundance of showy, white flowers.

The flowers give way to small green berries that gradually deepen into red. They finally mature a deep, rich purple in early summer. Sometimes referred as Juneberry, named for the annual summer time frame of the ripe berries. Other common names for plants in the genus Amelanchier include saskatoon, shadbush, sarvisberry, and sugar plum.

Serviceberries look like large, dark blueberries. You can eat serviceberries raw, bake them in pies or cook them into delicious jams.

The Autumn Brilliance® Serviceberry can be pruned as a single stem tree or a multiple stemmed large shrub which is suitable for accent planting or privacy screening. A great choice for a landscape centerpiece, this serviceberry tree has oval shaped, coppery-red leaves, becoming rich green throughout the growing season, and then red again for a fiery fall display.

Plant serviceberry trees in full sun for maximum fruit production. Autumn Brilliance® Serviceberry is self-pollinating, but you will have a larger harvest of berries with another serviceberry tree nearby.

Why did you choose this?

Heard they were yummy

It should hold up well in Arizona's hellish summers, will provide shade and edible fruit

I wanted to try the fruit. I enjoy making jams and gifting them for the holidays. This could add a new flavor into the mix... Someday

We are growing a cut flower business and I want these branches for bouquets.

It says to plant different varieties for cross-pollination. So, would buying 4 of these trees not cross-pollinate them because they are the same variety? I'm fairly new to planting/gardening. Thanks in advance!

We appreciate you reaching out to us. The Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry needs two of the same for proper pollination.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!

Can this service berry be pruned  to form a less wide spreading yet multibranched tree?

Yes you can prune this but I do recommend asking an arborist for tips if your unsure,

Single stem vs multi-stem. Am I able to train this serviceberry to be a single trunk tree?

Although they say the serviceberry is sent out as a single stem, this is not the case. There are 4-5 canes coming out of the root stalk. Hard to tell which one is dominate at this time. I'll probably give it 1-2 growing seasons and begin pruning. I made my purchase based on the fact that they said it would be a single stem - greatly disappointed.

When will you have Serviceberry trees back in stock?

We appreciate you reaching out to us. We do not have a guaranteed ETA on when more will become available. We are very sorry for this inconvenience and completely understand your disappointment. What is the growth rate of this tree?

They have a moderate growth rate They grow 1' to 2' a year.

Does this come as a multi trunk bare root? Or, as a single trunk?

This is a single trunk bareroot tree at shipping.

Are the fruit sweet enough to eat fresh?

Hello,
The Serviceberry trees that I remember growing near cool streams near me as a child were definitely sweet enough to eat fresh off the tree. In my area the locals called them "Sarvis Berries". The leaves looked very similar to those on the Autumn Brilliance Trees i received from Stark's. The trees I remember as a child in West Virginia had a white bloom early in the spring and had red to burgundy colored berries. Yes----they sweet and very tasty.

Will Serviceberry trees thrive in a south facing location, next to a steel building where it gets hot?

Make sure you plant it far enough away so it doesn't rub on the building when it gets bigger.

Can you professionally prune an autumn brilliance serviceberry to be a single stem tree?

I can't guarantee that these will be prepruned as multi or single trunk but once you receive your plant this serviceberry can be pruned either way.

What is the species / hybrid species for this serviceberry? (Autumn Brilliance)

Genus: Amelanchier
Species: x grandiflora
Cultivar: Autumn Brilliance®

So far, so good!
I ordered two of these little trees and put them in the ground this fall. Both have put out a bit of new growth and look very healthy. Their bright green leaves are now turning brilliant gold, as advertised for their excellent fall color. Can't wait to see how they grown next spring. They were well packaged and very healthy. Would definitely order trees from Stark Brothers again!

Beautiful tree, native to Midwest
I planted this tree in early spring 2020 and had berries that summer. It's a beautiful tree, native to the Midwest, with delicious berries. Just make sure you get them before the birds do!

Not as described. This one will take ongoing care to make it a nice specimen plant.
Multi-stemmed plant, not a single trunk as described. Plant was “ lopsided”, with the majority of the limbs on one side. Hopefully, with pruning, I’ll be able to balance the plant out.
