Autumn Brilliance® Serviceberry Tree
Description
About the Autumn Brilliance® Serviceberry Tree
Planted for both as an ornamental and for its edible fruit, the Autumn Brilliance® Serviceberry is a treasured tree for all seasons. Named for its notable fall color, Autumn Brilliance® is just as spectacular in the spring, with its abundance of showy, white flowers.
The flowers give way to small green berries that gradually deepen into red. They finally mature a deep, rich purple in early summer. Sometimes referred as Juneberry, named for the annual summer time frame of the ripe berries. Other common names for plants in the genus Amelanchier include saskatoon, shadbush, sarvisberry, and sugar plum.
Serviceberries look like large, dark blueberries. You can eat serviceberries raw, bake them in pies or cook them into delicious jams.
The Autumn Brilliance® Serviceberry can be pruned as a single stem tree or a multiple stemmed large shrub which is suitable for accent planting or privacy screening. A great choice for a landscape centerpiece, this serviceberry tree has oval shaped, coppery-red leaves, becoming rich green throughout the growing season, and then red again for a fiery fall display.
Plant serviceberry trees in full sun for maximum fruit production. Autumn Brilliance® Serviceberry is self-pollinating, but you will have a larger harvest of berries with another serviceberry tree nearby.

Yes you can prune this but I do recommend asking an arborist for tips if your unsure,
Although they say the serviceberry is sent out as a single stem, this is not the case. There are 4-5 canes coming out of the root stalk. Hard to tell which one is dominate at this time. I'll probably give it 1-2 growing seasons and begin pruning. I made my purchase based on the fact that they said it would be a single stem - greatly disappointed.

Hello,
The Serviceberry trees that I remember growing near cool streams near me as a child were definitely sweet enough to eat fresh off the tree. In my area the locals called them "Sarvis Berries". The leaves looked very similar to those on the Autumn Brilliance Trees i received from Stark's. The trees I remember as a child in West Virginia had a white bloom early in the spring and had red to burgundy colored berries. Yes----they sweet and very tasty.
Make sure you plant it far enough away so it doesn't rub on the building when it gets bigger.
I can't guarantee that these will be prepruned as multi or single trunk but once you receive your plant this serviceberry can be pruned either way.
