Description

About the Columbia Sycamore Tree

A widely adaptable and disease-resistant shade tree that makes a statement!

The ‘Columbia’ was developed in 1984 to resist the diseases that so often plagued Platanus Acerifolia. Also called, Buttonwood, Buttonball or American Planetree, this Sycamore is a large tree with a massive, upright trunk and large, crooked spreading white branches that sprout fruit balls with spiky spheres.

How to Grow A Columbia Sycamore Tree

Columbia Sycamore in full sun, with rich soil. It tolerates clay and periodically wet soils. However, once established, it will adapt to a very wide array of soil types.

The Columbia Sycamore grows at a moderate to rapid rate, 2' per year, and is long-lived. These stately landscape trees can grow 75 to 100' with a similar or greater spread. Under ideal conditions, it can attain heights of 175' and may have a trunk 10 to 14' in diameter. This Sycamore is highly resistant to anthracnose and mildew.

Why did you choose this?

I need fast shade and I wanted a keystone native species. Sycamore trees support 39 different species of butterflies and moths, including my favorite the Luna Moth.

Because I'm in finance and worked on Wall Street for many years and walked by the famous Buttonwood Tree, from the Buttonwood Agreement, signed on May 17, 1792 between 24 stockbrokers at 68 Wall…

Hello, does the Columbia Sycamore tree offer dappled shade like the regular sycamore?

Yes. However, be aware that this variety produces much more fuzz than any other because the seed pods form in clusters (like cherries ) as opposed to the other variety which the pods grow individually.

Can this tree be tapped for syrup like the American sycamore?

Sycamore sap has a lower sugar content than maple, so it'll take quite a bit more sap to make a reasonable amount of syrup.

How are these in high wind areas ?

A characteristic of a sycamore tree is its ability to survive strong downpours and forceful winds. In some coastal areas of the Northern Hemisphere, fully established sycamore trees are even used as a windbreaker that can help pacify the effects of a hurricane.

What is "dappled shade"? Is this a "messy" tree that produces debris like a cottonwood?

No Growth, But not Springtime Yet
I received it a couple of months ago and because it is our winter in SURPRISE, Arizona, I thought I would not be seeing anything but it is warming up to over 80° there during the day and none of the bugs are opening. I know that April showers bring mayflowers, so I'm just going to be patient and see if anything changes with it but it looks exactly the same as I received it. I will keep you posted. Thank you.
