Description

The Hybrid Poplar Tree is the fast-growing way to quick shade.

Tall, oblong-shaped trees sport large, shiny, dark-green leaves that turn golden-yellow in fall. Inconspicuous reddish-purple flowers. No annoying “cotton” like other cottonwood poplars.

The Hybrid Polar grows 5-8 feet per year once established. Plant single trees 30-35' apart for shade. Plant several trees closer, around 6-10' apart in a line for a lush privacy screen or natural windbreak that controls wind and soil erosion year 'round. Avoid planting near structures, pipes, and drains.

This landscape variety is cold-hardy.

The hope is that it will tolerate our climate. It is fast-growing. I hoped to get lance leaf cottonwood or Burr Oak, Patriot Elm, or Hackberry. I am willing to give this Shade Form a try at this…

A very fast grower!
My wife bought these a year before I moved in with her to act as shade and screen trees. 4 are planted along the road and one in the center of the yard. We live in southeast missouri so it is a rather mild climate, although winters still get very cold at night. Anyhow, when I moved here in November of 2015, all 5 trees were nothing more than small branches sticking out of the ground, very unassuming. That spring, however, they grew at least 15 feet (no kidding!) And every year since then all have grown luxuriant. The 4 along the road are coppiced every spring to about 5 feet above ground, while the one in the center of the yard is just allowed to do it's thing. The result is a very green, lush space in a once barren yard in very short time. The house receives much shade from the mid afternoon to evening sun, which can be brutal around here. Roughly 5 years later the center tree has grown to at least 50 feet tall and has a nice spreading conical shape, not unlike younger red oaks but achieved in a fraction of the time. The street planted trees have grown more shrubby but serve well as a windbreak as well as nice shade. We have had many storms, some of which have broken many maple trees around but these trees just bend in the wind, staying bent a few days but straightening out, then responding with more growth. I can see though how eventually they can outgrow their space but as for now, our yard looks great and they serve as great bird nesting spots as well as just good ol shade. I would say to anyone considering these trees to know they will grow very fast, yet at least in my experience, besides pruning, they are quite easy going in terms of maintenance. Of course in the long term I can see them getting unruly if left to their own, but with regular maintenance, can be beautiful and useful trees.

Pleasantly surprised
I was nervous when the four-foot bare root stick arrived, with roots wrapped in damp newspaper. It just didn't seem like much. I followed directions and used the tree starter kit. One year later, it's double the size, with lots of leaves and multiple branches. So far, so great!

Fast and Beautiful
I bought and planted two of these poplars in the spring and they have grown more than I could have hoped. After planting them in the spring, one is about 9 ft tall and the other is around 8 ft. They leafed out almost immediately and have been beautiful all summer. I hope they make it through the winter well and I look forward to many years of beautiful shade in my back yard.
