Description

Tom Pecan is a modern, high-performance variety released in 2014 by Dr. Darrell Sparks at the University of Georgia — bred with a specific combination of traits that set it apart from most home orchard pecans. High prolificacy, early maturity, confection-trade kernel quality, excellent kernel color without speckling, and outstanding resistance to scab — plus high resistance to black aphid and pecan leaf scorch mites — make Tom one of the most comprehensively outstanding pecan varieties available for home orchardists in Zones 6–9. Approximately 58 nuts per pound with a 55% kernel percentage. Patent protected. Type I pollinator.

Confection-Trade Quality in a Home Orchard Variety

Tom’s kernel quality is what earned it its reputation — the nuts are sized and colored specifically to meet the standards of the confection trade, meaning the premium market that demands the best appearance and kernel quality available. Clear, attractive kernels without speckling and with excellent color make every harvest visually impressive, and the crunchy, flavorful nuts are outstanding for fresh eating, baking, and gifting.

A Comprehensive Resistance Package — Scab, Aphids, and Mites

Tom’s disease and pest resistance package is among the most comprehensive of any pecan variety available. Excellent scab resistance eliminates the most serious pecan disease threat, while high resistance to black aphid and pecan leaf scorch mites reduces two additional pest management concerns. For home orchardists who want high-quality pecans with minimal intervention, that triple resistance profile is genuinely exceptional.

Early Maturity and Consistent High Production

Tom ripens in late September to early October — among the earlier-maturing pecan varieties — and combines that early timing with high prolificacy and consistent production year after year. That combination of earliness, productivity, and quality consistency is rare in any single pecan variety and reflects the careful, goal-directed breeding that went into Tom’s development.
