Live in central Montana. When is a good time to plant blueberry plants. Planning now so the roots can survive the winter?

We appreciate you reaching out to us. Because weather and soil conditions vary so much from year to year and even within your zone, it's best to think of your planting time as a range of favorable conditions instead of an exact time.

You can plant new plants and trees:
1) when the ground is not frozen.
2) when daytime temperatures are above freezing (32ºF) and below 90ºF.
3) when extreme weather (blizzard, hail, torrential rain, etc.) is not in the forecast. Be sure to keep plants watered if you're transplanting in warm and/or dry weather.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!

The blueberries are doing alright.
The blueberry plants have needed a bit more fertilizer and sunshine than they had at first, but survived the winter without protection, and are beginning to grow.

Plants arrived healthy and in great condition. I put them right in and added Stark Blueberry Special Fertilizer and have been watering as needed. They wintered well and have grown in height and breadth since this spring. Excited to see these grow into productive bushes.

2nd and 3rd year going strong
3 years ago I ordered several Elliot Blueberry plants and the next year ordered several more. I have a nice hedge of them in front of my house lining the sidewalk. They are still small but the three year plants have produced berries already. I have not lost a single one and I'm very pleased with this variety.

Elliot blueberry is growing in 6A
I planted 3 Elliott and 3 Chandler blueberry bushes. All Chandler bushes died while Elliott survived. They are very small but growing. I’ve used acidifier and blueberry food. I also collected bunch of pine needles for mulch. I got store credit for Chandler blueberry but may go with a different type of blueberry to help with cross pollination.
