Why did you choose this?

I have green wanted other varieties

Great variety to add to the garden

Love gooseberries and have not tried these varieties.

I planted the Invicta Gooseberries 2 and 3 years ago in plastic half whiskey barrel planters (Zone 4B.) We harvested enough gooseberries to make 12 quarter pint jars of delicious jelly. (See the Amy…

Can they grow well in San Francisco Bay Area?

I live in Pennsylvania. The summers are hot (90•) the winters are cold (10•). I’ve had them 2 years and they are thriving. As long as I can keep the deer from eating them.

Do these varieties really survive in North Texas zone 8 with the heat we get in summer?

I live in Guymon, OK (north of Amarillo) in zone 6B. My first year planting both gooseberries and jostaberries and currants was a learning experience. While they all started out fine, I lost several (I think) due to the mid-summer heat and hot, dry wind we get here. My second year planting them, I moved them into a part/sun shaded, somewhat protected location with much better results. No casualties and all came through the winter with flying colors. Likewise with some blueberry varieties. I was quite surprised by how well most blueberry varieties did here (quite unexpected) but several varieties (again) baked by the end of the summer. Same solution. worked for me there too..

How would these do in the high desert of Arizona?

I'm growing these in the high desert of southeast Idaho with no issues. Im a lot further north, but I would imagine the high desert temperature swings from day to night still apply. on the second year growth I harvested 3-4 gallons of berries. They seem to be doing very well and take minimal care.

Are these gooseberries thornless?

No these have the classic gooseberry thorns. I haven’t found a thornless gooseberry yet

Do you have to have a male and female plant?

Both gooseberry plants in this collection are self-pollinating, but having them both will boost their production, giving you more and larger fruit.

Do they have thorns?

Yes they have thorns, but everything that helps keep the deer from eating them before I can is welcome.

Beautiful Gooseberry Plants
I am so excited to have my own gooseberry plants. When the plants arrived, they looked like little dead sticks. I was not able to plant them immediately, but I followed the directions to keep the roots moist. Once planted they took off growing! Beautiful leaves on every branch. I have been very impressed with everything I have bought from this company.

Good healthy plants.
I bought these as bare root plants. They started budding then leafing in about 3 weeks. They are both growing vigorously and are quite healthy.

Growing
Both varieties were planted at the end of March. The Pixwell variety started to green within a week and are looking very healthy. The Hinnonmaki Red had no signs of life until the middle of May. I thought they might have died, but decided to give them some time. This past week they finally started to show signs of life and are now starting to green out. Both varieties are now growing fine. I won't get to taste them for a few years, but they are growing.

All the plants and trees I have ever ordered from Stark arrived in good shape and have grown. I highly recommend using Stark Bro's.

Green and red Gooseberries
I ordered four bare root Gooseberry plants. They arrived on schedule and in good condition. At that time I was not ready to plant them so I potted them. As of February 24th they are ready to go into the ground. My experience with Stark Bro's was positive.
