Description

Bristol is widely regarded as the best-tasting black raspberry variety available — a Cornell University licensed variety that has earned that reputation through generations of devoted home growers who keep coming back to it for its large, firm, richly sweet berries with just the right touch of tartness. All-purpose and deeply reliable, Bristol produces heavy July harvests of glossy black raspberries that are outstanding for fresh eating, freezing, and homemade preserves. Vigorous, upright, cold hardy in Zones 4–8, and self-pollinating — Bristol is the black raspberry by which all others are measured.

The Best-Tasting Black Raspberry — A Cornell Standard-Bearer

Bristol’s flavor reputation is its defining quality and the reason it remains the benchmark against which other black raspberry varieties are compared. The large, firm berries have a rich, sweet flavor with a pleasant tartness that creates the full, complex black raspberry character that devotees find so compelling. The firm texture means the berries hold up beautifully for freezing and preserving without becoming mushy — delivering that exceptional flavor year-round, not just during the July harvest window.

Vigorous, Upright Canes — No Staking Needed

Bristol’s upright growth habit produces strong, self-supporting canes that don’t require staking — a practical advantage that simplifies management and makes the planting easier to work with at harvest. The vigorous growth establishes quickly and rewards consistent annual production from plants that bear within 1–2 years of planting.

Important Planting Notes

After planting bare-root canes, prune them back to about 2 inches above the ground. This is a critical step that encourages the roots to send up strong new growth — don’t skip it. New growth will emerge from the ground nearby rather than from the original cane, which is normal raspberry behavior as the root system sends up new shoots.

Note: Do not plant red, gold, or purple raspberries within 75–100 feet of black raspberries, as black raspberries can be more susceptible to viral diseases spread by aphids moving between nearby plants.
