Description

Nova Red Raspberry was born in the cold — originating from Nova Scotia, Canada, it’s one of the most cold-hardy raspberries available, proven in climates all the way to Zone 3. But it’s not just tough — Nova produces high yields of medium-to-large, bright red, firm berries with a fine, balanced flavor that stores and ships exceptionally well. Resistant to most common cane diseases, vigorous, and adaptable from the harsh winters of Canada to the heat of the Midwest, Nova is a reliable workhorse variety that delivers season after season.

Exceptional Storage and Market Quality

Nova’s firm texture is one of its most practical advantages. The berries hold up beautifully after harvest — storing well and maintaining their quality far longer than softer varieties — making them outstanding for fresh eating, jams, jellies, baking, freezing, and drying. For anyone selling at farmers' markets or running a U-pick operation, that firmness and attractive bright red color make Nova a natural choice.

A Flexible Season — Summer in the North, Fall in the South

Nova’s harvest behavior adapts to its climate in a genuinely useful way. In northern growing regions it bears in June and July as a classic summer raspberry; in warmer southern climates the harvest shifts to fall. That flexibility extends Nova’s appeal across a wider range of growers than most single-season varieties, and the upright growth habit with small spines makes it easy to manage and prune regardless of location.

Cold Hardy to Zone 3 — Built for Northern Climates

Most raspberry varieties stop being reliably cold hardy around Zone 4 or 5. Nova pushes that to Zone 3, making it one of the few premium raspberry options for growers in the northern United States and Canada where winter temperatures routinely challenge less hardy varieties.

Important Planting Notes

After planting bare-root canes, prune them back to about 2 inches above the ground. This is a critical step that encourages the roots to send up strong new growth — don’t skip it. New growth will emerge from the ground nearby rather than from the original cane, which is normal raspberry behavior as the root system sends up new shoots.

Note: Do not plant red, gold, or purple raspberries within 75–100 feet of black raspberries, as black raspberries can be more susceptible to viral diseases spread by aphids moving between nearby plants.
