About the Empire Apple Tree

Disease-resistant to fire blight and cedar apple rust, the Empire Apple Tree is a low-maintenance favorite among home growers. This productive variety yields beautiful, tasty fruit with minimal effort and thrives across a wide range of climates.

A cross between McIntosh and Red Delicious, Empire offers the crisp tang of McIntosh balanced by the sweetness of Delicious. The medium-sized apples have juicy white flesh and a well-rounded flavor, perfect for fresh eating, baking, salads, and cider.

Developed in Geneva, New York, and introduced in 1966, Empire is cold-hardy, easy to grow, and ripens in September, making it a favorite for early fall harvests.

How to Grow the Empire Apple Tree

Plant in full sun with well-draining soil. Hardy in Zones 4–7. Water consistently and prune annually to maintain shape and encourage strong fruiting. Pollinator required — see recommended varieties below for best results.

With strong disease resistance, wide adaptability, and exceptional flavor, Empire continues to be a trusted favorite for home growers.

A licensed variety of Cornell University.

Can an Empire and Wine crisp apple tree pollinate each other?

Thank you for your question! Yes, Empire and WineCrisp™ will cross-pollinate.

the empires I planted are not leafing out yet but the Cortlands are should I be concerned?
Is this apple tree resistant to verticillium wilt?

Yes it is. It is hearty at the stem and therefore can keep such wilting at bay

I am wondering how this tree would do in a windy location. Our Fuji tree is doing great but we had another apple tree that was a bit leggy, could not get established, and eventually blew down.  Has anyone had trouble with the Empire apple trees in windy areas?

If you have a dwarf they have shallow roots and should be staked regardless of the apple variety you have . Semi dwarf have deeper root systems but I’d recommend staking for the first few years till well established.

Will this cross with honey crisp or red Fuji?

Unfortunatley no the Empire will not pollinate with either of those trees as Empire is an early season bloomer and the other variaties are Mid season bloomers.

What is the best dwarf apple tree to buy that will produce fruit the quickest?

I purchased an empire and pristine in 2020. In 2022 the pristine had numerous apples. The empire didnot flower but is growing nicely

Do you need 2 apple trees for them to fruit?  and, can you plant two different varieties next to each other?

Generally with apples one needs two different subtypes as apples will not self pollinate. One needs to have two subtypes that flower at the same time so the bees can transfer pollen. Crab apples are good pollinators. My experience is that crab apple flowers last longer and there are usually more flowers.

I read in a previous response you use different rootstock for different results. How can I order a tree on Geneva? (Some fire blight resistance is more important to me than the size of the tree)

Unfortunatley we can offer a specific rootstock or special order. Our growers choose the best rootstock for desired results.

How big is the tree when you get it?

That will depend upon which option you choose. Please see the "Choose an option" dropdown menu near the top of the page, which will show you the various sizes/options that are available.

Does the Emprire come in a semi-dwarf or dwarf tree?

Mine is semi dwarf and is slow growing

Most Productive Apple tree and resistant to Japanese Beetles and CAR.
The Snapp Stayman Apple Tree has been the most productive tree in my orchard the last two years. I have an 80-apple variety orchard made up of 10 trees planted every year for last 15 years. Snapp Stayman was planted 10 years ago. I am ordering a second one due to its production. It survived the Japanese Beetle invasion and heavy Cedar Apple Rust exposure. It produces big apples mostly free of insects. I don't spray. Use for juice, freezing apple slices, and shredding on food.

This tree is growing well. It came in dormant and I was able to get it planted, and it's been about six monthes. I am having issues with fungus, and hope to be more proactive next year.

Great Growth
I have been very impressed with the growth of the Empress apple tree. I have several other Stark apple trees and the Empress has by far grown the fastest.

Very healthy tree
Planted this fall. I purchased the ez-start supreme dwarf. For a little more money , I feel the supreme , with its larger caliper with feathers is a nicer tree than the regular ez, which is just a 2 foot whip. Tree was very healthy and I expect it to be a wonderful addition to my orchard.
