Questions & Answers
Hi Karen, I've been dealing with deer in my apple orchard for many years. I use three proven methods to keep deer away from my apple trees. See below from most expensive to least expensive.
1) 2 x 1 x 60 inch wire fencing and posts. You can buy the fencing at a local Rural King, TSC, or Farm & Fleet for about $100.00 per roll. Cust 10 to 12 feet lenghts for a 5 to 6 foot diameter fence around young trees. Use steaks to hold in place. This will keep keer and rabbits away from your young trees for about 5 to 6 years until trees are larger.
2) Electrice fence powered by solar-powered fencer/battery. This Is a bit more expensive for initial investment but in the long term cheaper than putter fence around every tree.
3) Cheapest and very effective but time-consuming. Homemade deer repellent: 1 cup whole milk, 2 raw eggs, 1 tablespoon hot sauce, 1/4 cup vegetable oil, 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap: mix all ingredients except soap in blender on high for 1 to 2 minutes. add dish soap with blender on lowest speed. Add mixure to 1 gallon water in hand sprayer. Spray trunk and lower limbs of trees. This is very effective and will actually change deer travel patterns. Only downside is you will need to apply after every rain.
Good luck!
I have not done anything to these old trees in all this time. I would appreciate any help you could give. I plan to order 3 trees.
Maybe you need to prune them or you are pruning them to much . If you are removing last year spurs then the tree will produce very little fruit if at all .But apple trees live for a hundred years or more also could be a frost or bee problem if you have planty of blooms
Yes you can pit them until you are ready to put them in their permanent homes. For a 4-5 foot dormant pear tree, you should plant it in a 10-15 gallon pot until you're ready to plant it in the ground. This size provides enough room for root development while preventing excessive water retention.
Yes, it will. They have similar bloom times.
Planting bare root fruit trees in the fall is fine. It's been warm in the eastern part of zone 6 and 7 so far in 2024. Good luck and don't forget many tree offerings from Stark have warranties. From a customer who has purchased many here.
Mine are on the tips. My favorite apple.
Yes, it is too early. My Grimes Golden apples are also falling. These are normally ripe in mid to late September. I had assumed the problem was due to the extreme amount of rain this year but that is only a guess. My Golden delicious apples are also falling early but my three red varieties seem normal. The green apples need not be wasted. They can be cooked and sweetened for applesauce.
I just ordered last year so I haven't had any from this tree yet. However I have ate them from the store, they are crisp, with a spicy flavor. Don't seem to bruise too bad. I love golden delicious, like these even better.
No. Do the initial dig deep enough so there is a good circle of loose earth then backfill to the desired depth
We appreciate you reaching out to us. We use several different rootstocks, depending upon the desired result and what is available. For that reason, we're unable to guarantee a specific rootstock.
If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a great day!
