I love hydrangeas and wanted to include several in my front garden bed. However, the garden bed is mostly light shade to shade. This variety is perfect because it tolerates shade to light shade, will not hide my windows when mature, requires little care, and has year round interest.

This hydrangea sounds like the ideal plant for the landscaping in front of my home which is the North side of the house and difficult to find a colorful durable plant.

Does this variety grow on old wood or new wood?
Rosalind G on May 21, 2019

Can i plant this in full sun ? How tall will this get?
Tracylynn M on Apr 29, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Hi Tracylynn,
I have two Ruby Slippers Hydrangea in my front flower bed and they are planted in full sun. They do beautifully. I do put some mircle grow acid on them at the beginning of spring. This will be their 3rd summer and they are gettting bigger each year. But I think they are a dwarf variety so they are perfect in a smaller space. I love the color of the blooms and look foward to seeing them all summer long. I hope you enjoy your plant as much as I enjoy mine.
Is this a drought tolerant plant?
Tara P on Feb 12, 2020
BEST ANSWER: In general hydrangeas need a considerable amount of water--that's actually what the "hydra" part of the name comes from. Having said that, oak leaf hydrangeas, and Ruby Slippers in particular, tend to need less water than other hydrangeas once established. I probably would not call them drought tolerant however.
I live in Ecuador at 2300 ft above sea level. The weather is in the 60s 70s year round. Gardeners grow hydrangeas here and I'm hoping to grow this one there. Any suggestions?

I have had my ruby slippers hydrangeas for over a year now and it is doing great! The flowers are so beautiful. Currently they in are in the process of changing from white to rosie pink and are stunning! I think they are one of the best highlights of the front garden.
