Description

Attractive red skin and light pink flesh. Rich, mildly sweet flavor is reminiscent of onions and garlic. Great for fresh-eating in salads, adding to sautées, and roasting. Each bulb grows to yield 3 to 4 shallots. Plants are not prone to bolting, but any bolting plants can be removed and used as scallions. Harvest in summer after leaves wither. Stores well.

How long does it take to harvest if planted in spring in zone 5 Chicago?

BEST ANSWER: In your zone, shallots should really be planted in the fall. If you do plant them in spring, they will be ready by mid-late fall.

I like them
I wasn't sure they would grow here but they did well. Great for stews, they will make you tear up, and produced at least three times their starting amount. Going into the second year and the replants are coming up.

Colorful and tasty
I planted them in the strawberry bed and they grew well. A few came back voluntarily this year. Can be planted between other plants without taking much space.
