The best basil for pesto. Sweet, fragrant slow-bolting variety is very productive. Shiny, heavily ribbed leaves have less tendency to become bitter in slow-cooked sauces. Keeps producing until frost, as long as you keep picking the leaves. Pinch off any flowers that appear to keep the plant focused on leaf production. Outstanding chopped and sprinkled over fresh pasta and in Caprese salad. Extremely popular with home cooks and very easy to grow.

  • Start indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost. Sow ¼” deep in sterile planting medium.

Prodigious Grower
I sowed these in early May with great success. We were taking good-sized leaves within about 6 weeks and have had more basil than we need from a 1.5' row for all of spring and summer. I cut 2-3 plants and gave them away in August and we are still oversupplied. This variety is a prodigious grower. Next year I will probably sow fewer plants because the harvest has been so large.

attentive and fast even for a small order
I love that pinching off flowers to prevent the plant from setting seed is mentioned. I grow enough and make a simple paste with olive oil lemon and salt and freeze it so I can enjoy all year.
