Description

The Saskatoon Serviceberry is a beautiful, early flowering native shrub. Its leaves are medium green and deciduous, a stunning ornamental piece, with the added benefit of small edible berries. The Saskatoon Serviceberry tends to flower in early spring with striking and fragrant 5-petaled white flowers.

After the flowers have faded, small green berries appear, turning blue-purple when ripe.

The serviceberry fruit are small in size – a wonderful food source for birds and animals. When eaten fresh, the berries are tart and taste a lot like blueberries. Serviceberries are often used in preserves and in pies, and if you don’t pick them, the birds will love them!

Fairly easy to grow and long-lived, the Saskatoon Serviceberry shrub grows upright and prefers full sun and soil with good drainage. For proper pollination, plant two or more of the same variety.

Nice size of plants
I bought two and they survived the first summer. One had a few small berries on it. Not much leaf set or growth. I’m hopeful for next year.

Service berry plants
While I don't like bare root plants as they usually don't make it these seem to be doing fine. Won't know if they live until they survive the winter but hoping for the best.

Shrubby
The plant is healthy and doing well. However, this species has many suckered coming up from the roots. It will need to be pruned continuously to produce a tree form.
