About the Golden Spirit Smokebush
Bring a unique splash of color to your landscape!
The Golden Spirit Smokebush is a newer cultivar of Cotinus, `Ancot`. It is distinguishable from other varieties of Cotinus by its spring and summer display of golden yellow leaves with lime-green hues.
The new foliage emerges with just a touch of red. Golden Spirit regularly produces tiny yellow flowers in spring followed by the signature post-bloom smoky summer panicles in June and July. In fall the foliage turns a fiery orange-red color, changing from the bottom up. The showy colors and accents make this smokebush a lovely landscape accent.
Growing a Golden Spirit Smokebush
This smokebush sometimes referred to as a ‘smoketree’ is a deciduous, upright, loose-spreading, multi-stemmed shrub that can grow up to 15’ tall but can be easily kept more compact through annual pruning. It has no major pest or disease concerns. This hardy shrub can tolerate a variety of soil types and is considered deer resistant.
Plant the Golden Spirit Smokebush as a single specimen, in a group or border in sunny areas around the home for long-lasting seasonal interest!

Questions & Answers
The Golden Spirit smokebush is generally considered non-toxic to animals, including dogs and cats. However, consuming large quantities may cause mild gastrointestinal upset.
Depends how far South you live. I just planted my yellow smoke bush last fall so it is just now waking up; however, my 4 year old purple smokebush that I bought at one foot is now 10 ft tall and 4 ft wide and keeps its purple colored leaves long into our harsh Chicagoland (zone 5) winters. If you are living further South than me, and looking for a shrub that holds its yellow leaves, try a Golden Vicary Privet (Ligustrum). They are as fast growing and carefree as the smokebush, and once they take off, are amazingly stunning. Only evergreens keep their foliage and color here through winter except my Golden Vicary, surprisingly.
I think you may be to hot for this variety but we recommend you to reach out to your local county extension office as they will have tailored information specific to your growing area.
